OT persimmons(Orange)

I saw these in the grocery store for $1.79. I got 2 trees full and I can't even give them away. I guess every seller has to have a buyer.

I just LOVE persimmons...especially when they get turned into persimmon pudding by a good ol' country cook!

I'm in Indiana...how close are you?

Pat, where abouts in Texas? I am S. of Waco about 60 miles between Hearne and Franklin. We have a lot of "Paw Paws", but no persimmons. Guess I should get some going. Been a long time since I've had any.

How long will one of these tree/bushes live and produce? Also can it be rooted from a cutting? If so what is the best way to do this.

No, I have never made one but I have had a slice of one a few times. I am sure google could find a few good ones.

Hello patsublett,
They look a lot better then the ones i saw at the market. COD them to me and i'll sure pay the freight. Best looking ones i've seen yet!
My mouth is watering just looking at them

They will live several years. These are Urecia, They have to be good and ripe are they will pucker your mouth. I have another which is a FUYU which I think is a better Persimmon

my grandmother had a persimmon tree in her backyard in Galveston...it was there before i came along and there when she sold the house.
them nasty things would sure draw yer mouff up.

I made 8 gallons of persimmon wine a few years ago. I thought it was awful, in fact, it reminded me of syphoning gasoline. It sat down in the cellar for a couple of years until one day when we were butchering my neighbor wanted a taste of it. He drank a couple of water glasses full and couldn't find his butt with both hands. I helped him to his truck and sent a gallon home with him. He drank seven gallons of it in seven weeks. I decided to try it again and I couldn't believe how smooth it was. It was so clear you could read a newspaper through a gallon jug of it.

Just another possible use for those 'simmons.

Do the urecia become very soft as they become dead ripe or do they stay somewhat firm? My inlaws who are in their late 80s and early 90s tell of a type when they were kids that was pretty sour untill dead ripe and from the sound of it sloppy soft. Said they didn't get many the racoons or possoms (sp) took most before they were really good for eating. We have been getting some from a fella down the street here in coastal SC that are firm and semi sweet and seem to get sweeter as they get softer. The wife just loves them and we don't know what variety they are.
