Jumpy ammeter

I have a neg ground VR-gen system on a Cockshutt 540 in which the ammeter seems fine at low rpm. But at higher rpm the needle on the ammeter wildly jumps from side to side ( maybe from -5 amps to +10 amps). I've re-polarized, checked and rechecked the grounding of the VR and still no change. Is my VR pooched?
Thanks

Could your gauge be bad?

I have a few that have/do act up, but don't think I've ever had one do exactly as yours.

The one in my combine sits at/near zero, running or not.. as soon as I turn my fuel pump on, it goes batty.. And it is NEW.. Old one didn't work at all.. had alt. tested at NAPA.. checked good, so I just put a volt meter in.. problem solved.

I installed an ammeter on my WD-45 and the needle jumped like that. I replaced iot with a better gauge and had no problems.
Some of the cheaper gauges don"t tolerate vibration well.
" course, if it was working well before and just began this, I would say it may be the regulator.
If the regulator has a screw on cover, remove it and watch the contacts to see if they are opening and closing erratically.
