On my pos army brat M-1008.. I'm losing fuel prime overnight..Starts cold then quits, crank , crank , crank , finally lights, runs good..I checked the transfer pump , have good vacuum, thought the check valves might be leaking enough to allow fuel to run back to tank overnight..Changed the transfer pump..In the process , I lost what religion I had and invented some new cuss words..What were they thinking on the position of that pump ?? Anyhow......Got any ideas ?? Someone said possible leak at filter housing, With that, It still has to drain back thru the transfer pump check valves to do that...I'm about ready to install an electric pump back by the tank and install a push button to prime it before starting...Whatcha think ??

I am not jdemaris but i may be able to help. What vintage engine? This sounds to me like it is more of an injector problem than injection pump or supply pump problem, but more information is necessary.

No it's not an injector problem..It runs well about 5 seconds after cold start-up, then just crapps out..1986 Chev. w/6.2 diesel..I put a rebuilt injector pump in it about 3 months ago..[ Unrelated problem]..Always ran super , starts easily, no smoke..After cold start-up and it quits , I loosen the bleeder valve on the fuel filter and I hear air compressed by the transfer pump..If I crank on it for about 20 seconds , it will fire and run..I looked at all the fuel lines and found no leakage or split hoses anywhere..Everything is dry as a bone under there..I would think if there is a suction leak somewhere , It would show some sort of dampness..

Hello Roy Suomi,
It sounds like the fuel filter is drained into the tank overnight. When it starts and sputters the air is preventing fuel from keeping the engine running.
You need to pressurize the fuel system from the tank all the way to the pump inlet.
Any fitting that is not making a good contact, will let air in and draind the system back to the tank. Pressure will usually show where the leaking connection is. The transfer pump could have a internal leak. When you pressurize the system, bypass the trasfer pump, so you wont hurt it. Its a tedeous process of elimination, but i think that is your problem.
Sometimes a one way check valve before the transfer pump is all you need to solve the problem. Also check anything that was done prior to this. Good Luck ....................Guido.
