I picked apples at my mos, then call the phone company to change her service so she would have long distance service. That just on the phone took me an hour most of it on hold. Then raked hay and took a break then baled the hay. Got 6 big bales not to bad for the area I was doing. And just now finished doing 5-3/4 QTs of apple butter. Oh by the way it is after mid-night but hey I didn't get out of bed till 9am give or take a few minutes.. Oh I still have 10 gal plus of apples to can in some way or the other but not today well maybe since it is already tomorrow.

Ever can them with just an aspirin ? My Mom used to.

Maybe lost the top one if it looked rusty, but rest was crispy.

CHEERS TOO YOU!!!

Tomorrow its pick, break, & can about 42 - 56 quarts of green beans for me. & I noticed today the potatoes (about 50 row feet) are beginning to die on top. That will be a job in a week, or 2! I like apples; but no time for canning them!

old .look in the ball blue book and try the apple preserves. They turned out good for us ., they are good on top of pancakes in the winter. I made both apple butter and the preserves. Ithought the preserves were easier to make . and took way less time.

Rich, come on up this way and get some sweet corn. It's "only" 350 miles, but we have plenty. Marilyn and I are going to start freezing corn either today or tomorrow. We could fill the freezer with just sweet corn alone. The corn is in great shape with big ears and no worms and most importantly the brown dog has done a good job of keeping the coons at bay. Planted it way too heavy at a 33000 population but it's in a fertile old cattle yard on black soil and we've had all the rain we need plus some. Now we have sweet corn running out of our 'ears'. Dad and step-mom have already been picking some and son and daughter-in-law will be raiding it soon too.Jim

I didn't plant much sweet corn this year because I still have a good bit in the freezer from a couple years ago. I did plant a few rows of it in the garden and then planted some out for the wild life. I.E. Deer so maybe I can go hunting by stepping out the front door and pulling the trigger LOL

I plan to can green beans in a day or 2 depending on if I pick a lot in the next day or so. Been getting about a gal. a day so have enough to be able to can them. I have never tried the pressure cooker yet but plan to. Oh well every thing else it seems I have learned I have done it the hard way. LOL

That is how I like them if I can't stew them fresh. We just can them in apple juice, no sugar, ok maybe a little brown sugar. Gravensein apples. Yes good on pancakes....James

did you try to freeze string beans ? we blanch them rinse them in cold water and freeze them, IT is a lot easier than canning. They are not as good as fresh, but in the winter they taste pretty good!

Ya I froze a lot of them last year but they just do not seem to be as good frozen as they are when canned. When you can them you can add things like onions and or bacon and you can not do that when you freeze them. Been looking in my new canning book that my mom got me and think I'm going to try the Tomatillio apple salsa and also try the farmers corn salsa an see how those will be.

These apples are the pie/canning type and they do not get real big either and boy are they sour. The horse do seem to like them but to sour for me. LOL
