engine problem??

I have a MF 1080 diesel that, when the pto is engaged - the tach. kind of bounces...not really surges but hesitates...it is very steady in time but it acts kind of funny when under a load. It bales/mows all day just fine but the engine just keeps bouncing - maybe 1 or 2 hundred rpm.
what is the cause of this?

sounds like a fuel delivery problem. We bought an 1105 that hadn't been used for some time and we had to clean the tanks due to algae and rust. The most logical place to start would be a fuel filter change. On our 1105, I wound up putting a glass in-line filter between the tank and lift pump. The element can be cleaned, and you can see how bad your fuel contamination issue is.
 
IMHO, the governor CAN NOT react that quickly to the plunger load of a square baler when baling hay. I would not worry about the bouncing tach.

On a small tractor like a farmall H the governor will certainly kick in every time the bale plunger compresses hay.
 
That's why most tried and true old professional balemasters use the ETD. With an ETD, the disgronificator smooths that phenonomen out and you will barely notice it.
 
If the engine RPM is rolling up and down a bit with the plunger I'd say that normal. THe govenor won't respond that quickly as most govenors have ~200 RPM droop before reacting much.
On the other hand, if the engine is steady and the tach bounces then I'd suspect that the cable is dry or pinched somewhere or is simply about ready to fail...

wouldnt that mean there is probably a loose nut behind the steering wheel?? (sic) what does the computer show when you plug in the diagnostic meter into the obd II port? Look for an ID-10T error code. I'm having the same problem with my round baler.
 
Yes, the governor will kick in BUT it is NOT able to keep the engine or the PTO's RPM ROCK STEADY. The tach WILL still bounce.
