Pony tractor, not starting.

Old worn out Pony tractor, sat unused for some time. Re-wired to 12 volts, all new wires, selenoid, ignition, new cables. The stage it is at now , will run/fire as long as you are holding the key on. Suggestions? Tractorsam I might need you to get this "PONY" running. Cheers, Murray //// Note: posted the compression results a few months ago, information received back at the time was to continue on , the compression was good to work with.

If you have a ballast resistor between the ignition switch and the coil it's probably the culprit. Hal

Your sw is wired wrong or you would not have to hold the key to keep it running. Recheck the wires going to the coil when the key is released or mite even have the wrong sw.

my uncle had an I.H. that had the same trouble the wire to the ballast resistor had broken off.

Thanks for all those who have given information.
Here is how I have the tractor wired.
One wire from pos. side of coil to ign. on switch.
one wire battery /selenoid to battery on switch.
one wire starter on selenoid to starter on switch.
one wire ACC. on switch to minus on amp. gauge.
one wire from alternator to pos. side of amp. gauge.
I did/and still have a 53 Ferguson wired the same way. Thanks for all the help. It's close to starting as the muffler get's quite warm when the engine is turing over. Thanks, Murray

Have you checked for battery voltage at the coil
with the points open and the ignition switch in the "on position"? If there's no voltage its never going to run. There should be voltage at the coil as long as the ignition switch is on. Hal

You should place this request over on the MH&MF forum since someone over there may have had the same problem. Hal

Run a separate wire from your battery to the coil then see if the engine will run. If if does you don't have it wired right. Hal

One wire from pos. side of coil to ign. on switch is correct

One wire battery/solenoid to battery on switch. Not correct. Remove this wire from switch, be sure it is on the hot battery cable side of solenoid and connect end removed from switch to -side of amp gauge

one wire starter on selenoid to starter on switch Correct.

One wire on ACC. on switch to minus on amp gauge. Not correct. Remove this wire

One wire from alternator to pos. side of amp gauge. correct. Add a wire from here to BAT on switch.

Turn ignition (points closed) and/or lights on, engine not running. There should be a slignt negative deflection on ammeter. If so it is correct, if positive deflection reverse leads on ammeter.
