o/t painting galvanized roofing

it all comes down to how much u wanna spend? I just got done going thru the process. cheapest coverage is oil based barn paint, it goes upfrom there. i did it about 3 different ways and am running a test. biggest problem that i can see with oilbased paint, is how long it takes to dry! you can get alot of painting done, fast, with a sprayer and $100 worth of paint!

Short answer is yes. Rustoleum used to offer a primer for galvanized metal. It works very well. If you do not use a primer for galvanize the top coat paint will peel in short order.

Thank you Sir for saving me the trouble and hassle. I just put up another tool shed that I'm going to roof with left over galvanized siding. The metal roofing on my barns and other tool shed came finished white, so to make them match, I figured I'd roll or spray with white rustolium, but if there's another step to prime with rustolium, well, I prefer the pay me now while its much easier than later method.

Thanks so very much.

If there is rust on the galvanized you should spray it with Rustoleum rusty iron primer first as that will stop the rust. After that you can use either oil or latex. I prefer latex as it won't peel. If the galvanizing is weathered and not rusty you don't need a primer.
If the galvanized is still new and shiny let it age before painting or wipe it down with white vinegar as that will etch the new galvanizing so the paint will stick to it.
I have been doing buildings this way for 12-13 years and never experienced a failure.
After you spray rusty iron primer you should wait about 5 days before top coating it. This allows the chemical in the rusty iron primer to work.

Silver aluminum roof paint. Anything else will peel in a few years, Aluminum will slowly wear away, no peeling. If you have rust showing add some spar varnish and black roof coating. Its self priming. Almost need a high pressure painter to spray it tho.

JD2ACWD, There is a roof coating that will go directly on rusty Sheet Iron, I mean rusty to the point that there is no galvanized left!!
This the best stuff I have ever seen, so do not use Aluminum paint. If your roof has imperfections the fibers in it, will fill and meld with the liguid porition of the roof compound. it will turn water and make an old roof look like new and preserve it for years to come. I did a roof on my old barn about 15 yrs ago,it was about 50 yrs old at the time I coated it, it is still doing well, even though it could use a new coat to get it to looking new again.
I used a 8 in wide brush bolted to an old broom handle so I could stand and paint it on the roof. Hope this helps. My # is 512-577-3837 if you want the name of this stuff, my remaining can is down at another building, not here I can get it later If you want.
Later,
John A.
