I am working on a 1963 pontiac bonneville for a freind.I need a new drive disc or drive damper. it is the part that bolts to flywheel and drives pump in transmission looks like a clutch plate but no facing.I can find no one that even knows what I am talking about let olone any help . Help? paul

It sounds like you need a flex plate (Has the starter ring gear on it and bolts to the crankshaft like a flywheel). The part that actually drives the tranny pump is called a torque converter (it looks like a big donut). You should be able to locate one in a salvage yard that specializes in older vehicles. You may even be able to find a new part, if you keep looking. Pick up a copy of "Hemmings Motor News" for sources for old car parts. I wouldn't think you would have too much trouble finding one for that car.
Good Luck and God Bless

I think the part you are talking about is called a "flex-plate", and the ring gear for the starter is welded to it. It bolts to the engine crankshaft, and then the auto transmission torque converter bolts to the flex plate. I personally do not know where to find one, but there should be plenty of them out there somewhere. If I remember right, ALL Pontiac V8 engines could use the same flex plate, flywheel, transmission, etc.

You will likely be able to get this at your local auto parts store. I got one recently for a 1966 Mustang for $80.

"Drive plate thingy" = flex plate
"oil pump thingy" = torque converter

Using the correct terminology might help at the parts store. Simply omitting the word "thingy" when talking to a parts guy will get you halfway there. They might be able to figure out what you're talking about.

referencing 1964 Chilton Manual. 3 spd Hydramatic, used on all models except Bonneville and Star Chief models. They used 4 spd Strato-Flight Hydramatic. Cadillac and Oldsmobile also used this transmission under different names. GM built this transmission 1956 thru 1964. I looked at cutaway drawing of this trans and can't figure out for sure what you are looking for, my suggestion is to try to find an older repair manual or parts pages at GM dealer if this transmission identification helps

#1 I should have said this was a roto hydromatic tranmission.

#2 there is no flex plate nor is there a torque converter in the bell housing

#3 there is however a regular flywheel and a pump in there and what the book call a drive damper that hooks the two together.

#4 I am still looking for the part and someone to sell me one

#5 I appreciate any and all help but for the replies that are not helpful or educational why do you put yourself in such a position?

Talk to a clutch rebuilder. If they can rebuild the spring pack in a clutch disc maybe they can rebuild that. Good luck.
I will ask my friend the Pontiac parts gal if she has any ideas, I KNOW GM will be no help.

I tried to find a forum for this thing for over an hour this morning. All I could find was uninteresting newer bonneville crap. And search engines give me a headache cause everthing under the sun , but what I need, is listed. But I think I found what I am looking for .thanks much though.Paul

pictures are worth many words. looking at cut away drawing in chiltons i think this is 3 speed trans and part is called "flywheel damper". belive some called this model of trans. a slim jim. torque converter is located behind pump in main trans case. hope this helps. leroy

That is not a standard Hydromatic. I had one with that transmission. I got it rebuilt for $150 but that was in 1971 :)
