Is the rest of the machine running? The hood, both nose cones and grill are pretty much 830 items.
I wouldn"t pay more than parts donor price for another 80/820/830/840.
Electric start or starting engine?
The scraper is often separated and jerry rigged to work behind a newer tractor.
What is the serial number? I bought an 840 for parts and ran the serial number for fun before tearing it apart. Turns out it"s a factory prototype with a long and extensive history.

rest of tractor looks good pan looks to all be there.told it they uesed it 10 years ago. it is electric start.

they are asking 3000 for it.i would like to think 2500 would get it running and working.hate to think how much time money it will take to restore. when all said and done hope to be under 10000 now i know i can buy 830 restored for that. i have never seen a 840 for sale have no clue what they bring

As with most projects. Some tinkerer tears it apart, looses pieces and gives up. Finding all the sheet metal is going to be a challenge for you.
Only way you can come in under $12,500 purchase + repairs is "make it run" but not a "restoration". Is to find another 840 tractor cheap, often without the elevator scraper.
Then mix and match worn parts to " just make it run". Then apply a coat of paint.
Count $20,000 if you seriously get into bearings, seals, driveline, tires, electrical, injection, hydraulics etc to "restored " condition.

Yes, no and maybe............
It won't bring $20,000 at an auction but....A smartly refurbished 840 with Hancock scraper maybe worth it to yourself personally.
If you have an earth moving job that would otherwise be hired out to a contractor. And perform the work yourself with a refurbished 840? $20,000 maybe a bargain to perform the work. And still have the machine afterwards too.

As for an "830 restored for $10K", I have never seen one that cheap.
If it is truly restored AND painted correctly, you need to add around $5,000 or so more if you are lucky.
If you intend on properly restoring the 840 w/ Hancock, you will be way past that number.
Too many people try to sell cleaned and painted tractors that will start and run as "restored".
It ain't even close in most cases.
