Farmall "A" PTO Whine

Switching a Woods mower to different model machine can be trying! I bought this A Farmall because it shifted well, was pretty straight, and pto was smooth and almost silent when engaged. After installing the large V-belt pulley on the PTO shaft and tightening the belts, I get a loud whirr sound from the PTO housing. Further investigation showed water in the gear oil. Will cleaning the case and refilling with oil stop the noise? Is the tension on the pulley revealing a worn out part?

It has been my experience that a load on the belt pulley side of the PTO will create the whine, that's normal. I would keep an eye on things and watch for outboard bearing trouble though I wouldn't be surprised if you never see any.

It's what they do.

Sounds loud to you because you are sitting right on top of the darned thing.

Betcha can't even hear it if you were 6' away from the tractor.
