History of My tractor?

I wish I knew more about my JD 401 industrial tractor. I bought it about 4 years ago from someone who was a middle man, who didn't know much about the tractor's history, other than it had water in the oil. By the time I opened up the engine water had taken it's toll. One main had spun a bearing. Had to buy new main caps, and line bore mains. New liners, and pistons, new cam, regrind lifters, Valve job, resurface head. I know the engine is now good. Fron the hour meter the rest of the tractor has over 5000 hrs. Trans oil was fairly clean, but changed it. Is 5000 hrs a excessive amount of hours? I have about 25 hours on the tractor now, and everything works.stan

If the tractor was not abused 5000 hours isn't much at all. Some tractors can be junk at 1000 hours with a rough operator and continuous abuse. Some tractors go over 15,000 hours. It all depends on how the tractor was used and maintained. Dave

You should be able to goto your Deere dealer and have them run the serial number and see were it was originally sold. Major repairs done by Deere dealers and other information is also available from Deere. Last fall I was looking at a couple combines from private party's. I had my Deere dealer run the serial numbers. Quite the interesting history on one of them, not near what I was told by the owner. The other had a good history exactly what the owner was claiming.
