OT Blue Jays Are Getting My Eggs

Every day when we go to collect the eggs, they"re pecked open. Mrs. Chuck (CA) went in yesterday and a Jay flew right in the coop and then right back out again when it saw her.
What can we do? So far, we"re thinking of a picture or model of an owl, or maybe shiny strips of aluminum foil hanging on string.
I"m worried about the owl idea scaring the hens.
Any suggestions?
Maybe the owl on the roof?

Thanks,
Chuck

Jays are really smart, about like crows. I doubt an owl will stop them for long, if at all. Somehow, you are going to have to cause them to have a negative experience with your coop. A VERY negative experience. It could be it is only one or two Jays that are doing this. Could be you will have to remove them from the equation, by whatever means are legal in your area. Not much help, I know, but I don't know what can and cannot be done in your location.

Very well said!! That is the nicest way I have ever seen some one on here tell some body "just shoot the dang things".

I know it seems like voo doo , however in the mountains few years ago we were plaged by scrub-jays. local said shoot a few and hang in trees. We thought it was a joke. Others said no try it, believe me it worked. The darn things would fly in, see the birds hanging by their necks in the tree and fly out faster than they came in.

Collect the eggs earlier for a few days (before dawn (I know , but it is my answer) then replace the eggs with golf balls. Absolutely no satisfaction there!!! Jim

may not be the jays,..we have chickens that will eat there own eggs if you don't collect as soon as layed,...might look there, jays could be lookin for easy grain...
