I have a 1990 Ford 350/460 w/5 speed. has bad clutch chatter.Had a new clutch, pressure plate, bearings and flywheel refaced.Work was done at the best shop in town.No change.Need help.

first did it chatter when you took it in?chatter is caused my either a flywheel with hard spots in it, due to heat and abuse or a pressure plate that is warped, i would ask the shop how they resurfaced the flywheel, if done on a ammco brake lathe with a flywheel attachment they will not always work on newer flywheels for some reason, it needs to be turned by a job specific flywheel grinder, if it did not chatter when you brought it to the shop you have gotten a bad replacement clutch set and it should have a warrenty on it for parts, labor is up to the shop that installed it but id sure take it back to them , if nessessary depending on what is wrong id ask to have a new flywheel instead of having it resurfaced again

Clutch chatter used to be caused by oil on clutch from rear main bearing seal. But there are lots of reasons. Think shop is obligated to find problem if they diagnosed it. Used to back up to a tree and slip it and burn off the oil a little. Used to replace clutch on the side of the road. No refacing at all and usually was lucky. Modern vehicles are sophisticated, I guess. Good luck

Chatter can be caused by a number of things...bad u-joints, broken motor mounts, out of balance drive lines, even worn dowel pin holes in the bell housing. If it chattered before AND after the clutch was replaced you better look elswhere for your problem. Some new clutches will chatter, but it's a rare problem if the installation was done well.

Perhaps you should ask them if they would like to look at again before you take it somewhere else in case they would like the opportunity to avoid having everyone in town hear about their mistake?

It's a good idea when the trans is out to buff the bellhousing lip, the rear of the block, the trans mounting surface, and trans mounting face. Learned that the hard way one time. Miss-alignment, it don't take much. Most times it's corrosion between the iron trans and alum. bellhousing. Good luck
