Since there have been a few questions on here about how car air bags work , I looked it up on HowStuffWorks.Com and here is what they said. I know nothing except the basics about air bags , so I don't vouch for the truthfullness of any of this. I just know what they said.

How Air Bags Work
 
There is an e-mail floating around indicating a person of mature age walking across a pedestrian crossing with a motor vehicle stopped and driver honking the horn incessantly because he is impatient with her progress , so she walks across to the car giving the front a whack thereby inflating the airbags, then continues her walk.

An airbag is a controlled explosion in your face.
 
....which is a better alternative than an "uncontrolled" explosion in your face which you will get without an airbag.
