Wider Tires

I have a 1947 Farmall M wide front end with a loader and no power steering. I would like to put on wider front tires on the existing rims because when I have a load in the bucket, the front tires (6.00X16) sink down in the dirt and it is real hard to steer because they are so narrow. How wide of tires can I put on the original rims? Will 245 X 16 be too wide?

I think the 245s will rub on the spindle down tubes. You could replace the original hubs with the heavy duty 6 bolt style and then you could buy some new rims with the proper offset and go with the widest tire you can find.

Wider tires may not be the answer! As Mister T said there will be clearance issues and added cost to find a wider tire combo. Also common geometry and physics come into play (tires farther apart, less steering leverage, wider tires, more ground contact=friction, Look for an after market power steering system .You should be able to locate used or new on this website.

Hi Chris: I remember how hard they were to steer since we had an M narrow front stock 3 rib stock tires.. Another route is to consider a larger steering wheel and extr air pressure in front. I always used 1st gear and lower RPM to at least keep the front tires turning, which helped. Another thing I would do is stand with each foot on the rear axel... that put my hands closer to the spokes on steering wheel and I use my legs and back strength to help turn that dern steering wheel. The larger steering wheel does help. good luck ag

I just put 7.50x16 on the wide front of my MTA, and they are a little to big. One of them does rub on the drop tube, but I think the spindle/king pin was remodeled by a previous owner as the other side fits fine. Also, they just look a little to big. If I could find someone who needed the 7.50's, I'd replace them with 6.50x. Also, power steering is REALLY nice my M doesn't have it, but My MTA had it when I bought it. Hate to have to say it, but I like it...

I like the power steering idea. I have looked around this site and others, but all I find are individual parts, not a complete system. I'll just have to keep looking I guess.
