Replacing Sediment Bowl

I am replacing the sediment bowl on my IH 400 and think I need some kind of sealer on the threads so I can stop tightening when the fuel lines line up. Someone on here said that teflon tape doesn't work on gasoline, so what would be suitable to use? Wondered about blue silicon? Any thoughts? Thanks, Chris

try it with out any thing 1st. there made to not need anything on them threads. ad from exprience teflon tape sucks when applied with gasoline. it breaks it down really fast.

You need teflon tape that is marked fuel resistant. My roll is yellow. Got it at Orschelen's. Had the same trouble on my 806. It stopped the leaking around the threads.

Ever consider replacing the sediment bowl with one of those cheap in line filters that are used on modern engines? I just did that on my self propelled sprayer. Saves a lot of grief trying to get the threads to seal and the bowl not to leak around the gasket. Just cut a piece of rubber gas line in somewhere and add an in line filter and be done with it.

You would probably not get enough flow thru an in line filter with a gravity system, they work best with a fuel pump. I bought a compete sediment jar assembly a Fleet Farm for our C, it works great and you can see the condition of your fuel.

My experience with Gasoline and sealers leads me to use Gasket-Making sealer and NEVER, EVER Teflon paste...!!!
Put the sealer on dry..no gas present and let it set..it will work Fine as Frog Hair...!!!

It has a in-line fuel filter on it, been that way since I got it, works OK. I had one on my JD 70 for years due to crap in the tank. Finally got the tank cleaned out and put the regular set-up back on. I need the fuel shut-off so it don't leak gas thru the carb. I will try to find some of the yellow teflon tape, Thanks, Chris

NO silicone!

Gasoila is the stuff!

Soft-set is GREAT, for a job like a sediment bowl the hard-set is even better!
Gasoila

That's what the fuel man told me to use back years ago when I was setting up a new overhead barrell.

I've used the common, ordinary variety of teflon tape on fuel line fittings for years and I have never had a problem.

Those sediment bowls are meant to tightened until they do not leak and the fitting DOES line up with the fuel line.

Permatex Form-a-gasket works great. This is the brown sticky stuff, not to be confused with silicone gasket maker. Apply to threads and wait a few minutes for it to set up, then assemble. They have it at most auto. parts stores.

I think the yellow teflon tape is meant for propane and natural gas connections. The gas we use in our tractors is not a gas, it is liquid gasoline and has entirely different properties than propane or natural gas.

I think plain teflon tape is fine. I just put a sediment bowl on a welder with it and it doesn't leak. The new carb also has it on the fuel connection. I think the trick is to make sure all the threads on both pieces are completely dry when installing them. Dave

Used Permatex on the threads of "Uncle Earl's" gas tank.

Remember that the sealant, recommended for use with gasoline, was white and had to wait about 24 hours to let it dry.

Bought sealant at the NAPA store.
