O.T. Wiring a trailer connector.

I'm not sure how I can work tractor into the topic other than I own one and sometimes trailer it.

My neighbor asked me to help wire a flat 4 connector trailer plug into his '97 Dodge Caravan so that he could properly pull a U-haul trailer.

We followed the connector directions carefully and it does not work as it should. It gives only tail lights and brake lights but no turn signals.
---
Besides the ground connector, as per directions it is to be hooked to the tail light circuit and the left brake light and right brake light wires. That is precisely what we did.
---
On the van there is a separate wire going to each light for the turn indicator. If I tie into those instead of the brake wires will I still have brake lights or will I gain turn lights and lose the brake lights?
----
Should be simple but I'm in a little too deep and just can't get it figured out.

Perhaps I should add that I did not hook the trailer up for testing, only used the through the connector grounding.

Would appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks

You cannot do what you are tryin to do without a taillight converter. If the turn signals are amber and the brake lights are red they are on two seperate bulbs. You must use the converter. Available at NAPA or any good auto parts store for under 20 bucks. I keep a couple in stock all the time.

I'm not familiar with Dodge Caravans, but I do know some vehicles use a 5 wire set up for the lights and a converter is sold to go to a 4 wire system. The 5 wire uses separate wires for the turn signals and brakes, where the 4 wire uses the same wire for both. You may need to purchase a converter to make all the lights work.

If the pull vehicle uses a 4 wire system (i.e. individual turn lamps) but the trailer uses the old 3 wire system, YOU MUST USE A 4/3 CONVERTER as posted below.

Thanks for the prompt replies everyone. I was a little afraid that a converter was needed but haven't wired any modern vehicles so really didn't have a clue.

My solution 20 years ago was to simply go to a different connector and install individual turn light on the trailer.

Vehicle was a Triumph Spitfire and the trailer was a cheap kit that I cut down to make into a 3' X 5' trailer that I could also pull with my motorcycle should the need arise.

Again my thanks!
