Time to get after my '55 IH400 again, last fall i left off with it getting fuel, gets spark, new plugs, new carb kit, check out distributor, new points and condenser, annnnnd.... it still wont start. I Got busy/cold and gave up for winter. My Advance weights are good, going to check my #1 cylinder and timing this time around. The last time it ran 2 yrs ago, all it would do is idle. If i gave it gas it would pop, sputter, and never pick up, and then return to a crappy idle. Im kinda baffled. Im wondering if its a timing gear problem?? Anyone have any clues/info on this, anything is good!!!

Check gear on camshaft-had a S-MTA it got lose on, also had H that I had to rotate dist rotor several degrees after trying everthing else and it ran great after that. Have fun

Lot of dumb questions here, just helped my SIL with a IH184 that they have been having problems with for two years. Turns out they lost the gas cap a couple years ago and stuck a non vented cap on the tank and it would run for an hour and would die even with the choke out full. If only everything was that easy. How about the age of the gas in the tank? Check to see if some of the valves are stuck I know our M and H would get stuck valves setting over the winter. Just some easy ideas to try.:->

Sounds like it runs on the idle jet but not the power jet. Maybe the power jet needs opened up. Did you clean the carb passages good? Another thought is a bad coil will act like that. Do you get a good blue spark that jumps half an inch?
