Anybody know of any companies that still make old fashioned leather steel toed work shoes? High top lace ups, not insulated, not high heels, not waffle stomper soles? The kind I've worn for 40 years?

Hi Tony...

I've got a set from Wally World that's not too bad... and at about $35/pr. Have seen some at TSC that I like better when I need a new set.

Work&Sport, sold thru Farm&Fleet stores. You have to look to find the ones made in the USA, but they are there.

Redwing makes several different styles of shoes. Bit more spendy, but I've had good luck with them lasting several years.

I need the high leather lace ups cause of a weak ankle. The best I have found the last several years are the Ariats lacer type cowboy boots with the little tab in the laces. They don't have too much of a heal and just enough tread that I can work in a tobacco barn in them.

I've been wearing mostly Caterpillar brand for the past few years and love them. Made by Wolverine I think. I've got 6 and 8 eye versions, the 8 eye Indiana style is my favorite but they get a bit warm in the summer. Last time I looked steel toes were and option. For going out I like a 1914 Triumph style Doc Martin. They also have a steel toe option in some of their boots. Real soft, comfortable, and a non aggressive sole.

The best ones I"ve ever used for comfort and endurance are Wolverines. And I"ve got some real wierd feet!!

RED WING. Will cost you a lot of money, but will last for years. Go to an actual shoe store and not the big boxes. I have had my pair now for over 4 years and I wear them everyday. Even in snow and mud. They are waterproof up to the top. Most boots let water in around the laces, these don't.

Best fitting shoes I ever had were also RED WING. I wear them all the time, even to church.

Spend the money once and be happy.

Redwings! I bought 2 pair in October of '02, and wear them alternate days! That lets them air out on the off days. they're still going strong!

Have had great sucess with Michlien footwear, look on line at ROCKY BOOT they are in North Carolina, They are the Distributors for these shoes, I've had them last 3 years using them in sever condition working aboard ship, in all kinds of oils, bilge water, etc, etc, excessive persperation a s well, find they dry out in less than 12 hrs, insoles are replaceable, and not afraid to pack them off to another ship after sailing for 4-6 months, of course putting them in plastic bags befor putting in suitcase, priced about 150.00 us

I'm in a pair of RedWings I bought in 1995. I don't wear them every day but they've had a lot of wear and I'm not hard on shoes. These ARE THE MOST comfortable shoes I've ever owned! I looked at a new pair recently and I don't think they look as good or as well built as they used to be. Not all shoes stores sell every flavor of RedWing.

I presume you're asking because the newer Red Wings aren't the same they were a few years ago and are made in China now. if you can find an American made pair I'd buy them.

Here is a classic RedWing.

These "look" like the ones I'm wearing.

don't know where they're made though.

do not buy redwings made in china junk now but still cost as much as the made in USA ones I made the mistake of buying a pair of these things and I will NEVER buy them again I have had good luck with HI TEK magnums they arent steel toes but I think they do make them

i wear "rocky" lace up hikers and have for years with very good success. leather, composite toe, water proof and very comfortable. outside in all kinds of weather and conditions. i do keep mink oil on them and regular polishing with "kiwi" polish.

Been wearing Red Wings for years with good success, but was told by a good friend and neighbor that I don't do enough work anymore to wear them out. Hows that for a compliment?

Looked at work shoes in th local farm store last fall. They had eight different brands of shoes ALL made in China including Carhartt. None made in USA.

I have worn Red Wings for the past 25 years, always gave great service nad they stand behind their product. Now I'm hearing they're made in China(the land of almost right), sure hope not. I usually get 5-6 years of continuous use out of a pair.

Try Hoffman Boots made in Idaho. USA
I love mine I work 2500+ hrs a year and buy a new pair every two years.
