5425 John Deeres

Just wondering how durable they are and if they have many problems. Thinking about buying one and wondering what other people thought of them. good idea or not to buy one.. Thanks for any help.

So far we like our, but its only a year old with 190 hours. We bought it because we figured it was the best on the market. (we could care less that its a JD) We replaced our old one(another JD, 2240) with 11,000 hours with it and kind hope this one make it that long. For the same horsepower as our old one its kinda sad that they had to make it so much bigger and bulkier than than the old one.
Like i said, we looked at all colors and this one seemed the best for us.

John - I have an "06 (I think) 5425. Its a platform tractor (without cab), with MFWD, left hand reverser (16 speeds F&R), a 541 SL (self leveling) loader, and quick attach bucket & forks.
Good: Power & 4wd, lifting height, reverser is great, fuel economy, looks (important?), EPTO (lower engine speed & still 540RPM for light PTO loads)

Not so good: Light (even with two weights per side in the back). Platform tractor is a bit high around the woods (compared to my 2240), it gets air in the injectors if it sits for a few weeks (perhaps this will be solved at that next filter change). The fender mounted 3PH & hydraulic controls seem a bit flimsy

All around good machine. However, for many folks, I"d think that the cheaper India and China-sourced machines will be just as good (for them). I think that is really why JD has changed their models recently, in an effort to compete with the Mahindras of the world...

Good luck, Steve

Steve, sounds like we almost traded the same tractors for the same tractors.
We have the "saddle mount" sits a little lower. Still highter than our 2240. We also have 4wd and the reverser. We filled the rears with fluid and have no weights although we need them also. We had one on the 2240 and then put a new westendorf loader on the 5325. Our 3pt and hyd are on the side of the seat, not on the fender like yours.
We really thought we were gonna get a kubota but couldnt stand the park brake on it. Seems they stole it right from a farmall m or h. For what we do, it was gonna be a big problem and that left basically the JD.
I do miss being able to run the foot throttle with the heel of my foot while i was brakeing. That was great while using the loader.
We havent had any prob with starting. And i agree, i really like the EPTO. But do you really think the economy is better? We think our 5325 is a bit thirsty.

F150 - I think that the 5425 is good on fuel, but I"ve never done a formal study... I still have the 2240 (I"m glad that I did not get rid of it, as nothing is a better 7ft bush hog tractor).

I agree that the "cheap imports" don"t quite measure up, but for most folks they"ll do just fine, at 2/3 the price. And Deere must agree, as they seem to be promoting their India-sourced utility tractors more these days.

Plastic, tin and electronics. Oh how I miss good old American cast iron & mechanical governors!
