Backblading gravel driveway

I see the questionnaire "best way to restore gravel driveway" on the YTMag home page every time I open it.
My question is " what does backblading mean?".
What kind of equipment does it require? And how exactly is it accomplished?

Not to oversimplify, but it means leveling it with a backblade. It requires a backblade or boxscraper. It's acomplished by leveling it with a backblade.

Use the blade backwards (turn it around so the cutting edge is pointing foreward),when backing up,the cutting edge will dig in to deep on gravel.

I like to turn blade backwards, drag it forward so girt/gravel gets distributed through under the blade as it is dragged along. If you pull it forward, it has a tendency to dig in.

Usually it means to use a blade the "wrong" way, so you are using the back side of the blade. The blade is less aggressive that way.

In the context of that survey, however, I think it is simply referring to any rear-mounted blade on a tractor because the only two options are "backblading" and "disc harrow".

Whaddya know? This is all news to me.

I always called a rear-mounted blade, as opposed to a belly mount, or a front mount that might involve the loader arms, a back blade. When I use mine, I might say that I'm backblading, or scraping, or grading or . . .

That's as distinct from the technique of back-blading, which is what I'm hearing described here, and can be done with a blade mounted in any of the three positions. Depending on the mount and the blade length, it is accomplished by either reversing the blade or operating a forward facing blade with the tractor in reverse, as the others have said. Just as valid a view as my own, obviously, and quite useful for smoothing and leveling without digging up more to complicate the job. Around here, we call it back-dragging. Quite apart from earthwork, it's also quite common with truck-mounted blades in snow removal from corners and pockets.

Not pickin' at the other answers. Kinda depends on where you're from and what folks call things, I guess. I'm livin' and learnin'.
