I may be getting a Cub Cadet 682 that has this engine in it. Now I know most guys shun these motors but I don"t recall why. The engine was supposedly just gone through and its a good deal for the price but I don"t want any trouble. Thoughts? Opinions? Personal experiances?

I have the KT17 Series 1 engine in my JD 317, bought the engine used. These engines are sensitive to oil level and off level operation so keep the oil changed, top it up before each use and don't do any serious side hill mowing and you should be fine. The connecting rod journals are lubricated by oil spray from ports in the camshaft and side hill mowing with a low oil level will starve these journals which can cause a rod to break.

Bought a ZTR mower with a 22 hp Kohler on it and with about probably less than 100 hrs the fuel pump fails. I tried everything to get it running finally took it to the dealer and it was $350. He was real familiar with the problem.

The Kohler KT-17 plain, They are not labeled Series 1, does not have a fully pressurized oiling system. The rods are lubed by spray. On the one I rebuilt for Dad about 2 months ago, I drilled some extra oiling holes in the rods. There are not any in the new rods I bought. I would also run a synthetic oil like MOBILE ONE 10W-30 in a KT 17. I have a KT-17 Series II that I re-powered a Gravely 812. The Series II has a fully pressurized oiling system. I run Mobile ONE in my KT-17 as I use it in cold weather to blow snow, if we have any. I have rebuilt several. Dad bought a JD 317 without an engine. I have enoug parts to build another KT-17 but I only have a good plane case. i think I an make the case a Series II.

Mike,
I have a 20 hp kohler commando on a Terramite T5C, a subcompact loader backhoe, with 870 hours. It uses almost no little oil between oil changes. Change oil and filter every 75 hours. The engine is starting to leak a few drops of oil. Had to go with a hotter spark plug. Carb has no adjustments and plugs were carboning up. I was told that my engine may last 1500 to 2000 hours. Runs great. Has to be choked to start. I was told that it is much easier to replace my Kohler than convert it over to a Honda. Does anyone know how to lean out a carb with no adjustments? George
