Grain cleaner

Now I don't mind sitting there at the chute of a wagon picking corn stems and leaves out as it's going in the auger if the corn dust blowing isn't so thick that my eyes are burning from it.

But I think I want to invest in a grain cleaner before next fall, one of the inline ones that just looks like a swinging hopper with a screen on it. Dad always said it was the pieces of cornstalk that go in the drying bin that build up in spots and stop the stirator, I think one of these should stop that too.

Who makes a good grain cleaner? Are they worth having, or are they a pain to use? I fill the bin with an 8 inch auger. Well, this year anyway. Speaking of that, have you replaced the bearings on the shaft of a Feterl auger?

Dan, I know conditions can vary but can you do more to clean up the grain sample with the combine? Usually you can close the sieves a little more than the book says and get a pretty clean grain sample. Just make sure you don't tighten things up too much and start putting corn out the back.

We have a Quik Cleaner that works very well. It has 5 augers in it. It takes the small stuff out of the big. In other words, it will take pigeon grass seeds out of wheat or dirt out of millet. I suppose what you are trying to do would be to take the stalks out of the corn, so this wouldn't work as well, since the small things go out the small auger. This would decrease the capacity immensely. Running wheat and millet will keep up pretty well with an 8-inch auger, but if you run it slower, it will do a better job.

This year's light corn can make it a little harder to get a clean sample. Increase the wind and you start blowing the light corn out the back. Closing the sieve decreases the wind by blocking it but it increases the amount of grain that goes to the return so you will have more damaged grain. It's sometimes a no win situation that you have to make the best of. Jim
