7.3L Diesel Problems

The 7.3L Diesel in my 1999 F350 is cutting out ocassionally. Either accelerating or at constant speed, the service engine light, wait to start light and water in fuel light come on and the engine drops to idle (does not shut down like it does with a cam position sensor problem). If you continue to push on the throttle, nothing happens. If you release the throttle, then reapply, the engine rpm will then increase and the lights will go out. This is random. It may happen several times in a 10 mile drive, or it may not happen for weeks.

Any ideas....must be some sensor or a relay or something.

Thanks,
Tim

Check with your ford dealer it sound like the crank position senser for which they had a recall .Has your cps already been replaced ?

The cam position sensor was replaced twice...second time due to a recall but the problem did not go away.

Your are right it was the cam sensor I was thinking of .Is taking it to auto zone a option and having it hooked to a scanner ? Is the check engine light stay on ?

You keed a ford enhanced scanner. The cheap ones will not pull the codes off the diesels. I'm thinking its something with the (IVS) idle validation switch. It tells the PCM to go off idle and take the input from the TPS (throttle position sensor). You can push all the way down on the accelerator but if that IVS doesnt make contact it will just continue to idle. If memory serves correctly the IVS has a two wire connector comming off of the accelerator and the TPS has three wires. Also do you have a chip? It sounds like it may be a loose connection because of the lights comming on. If it was (CPS) Cam Position Sensor it would stall and require turning the key off then back on.

Took it to AutoZone but their scanner would not pull any codes from the diesel. Will cost about 70 to have the Ford dealer pull the codes.

Hi Tim,

First thing I'd do is reset the puter (disconnect both battery's for 1hr) as this resets the PCM to the defaults and clears all codes.

If there's truly a problem, new codes will be quickly reset and the problem will continue.

I too would look at the TPS (fuel pedal sensors) as they were known too cause problems on that year.

thats why i got a duramax way less problems doesnt have all those idiot little problems popping up all the time.RICK

That almost sounds like a problem with the electrical shutting down for just a split second then coming back up with the lights coming on and such, but Id wager a fuel delivery problem.

Sounds like you know Ford diesels. Have any ideas about auto trans. glitches? Mine does a lot of nutty things but I keep driving it.

I have messed with one glitch after another. I know at one time mine didnt want to shift into 3rd (or sometimes 2nd) it would act like it was hanging up and then decide to shift. When I hooked up my computer it showed that it was trying to shift into reverse. So i dont know if that was the computer software glitch or some weird PCM glitch. Best thing to do is make sure it is flased with the latest software TDE-1 (old body style, i forget what the latest code was for the superduty's) if i remember correctly.

i am sorry if i offened any of you ford guys with my post.actually i do like ford trucks always liked the looks of them.grand dad had nothing but fords.i work for a large construction company that has a blend of ford/chevy/dodge diesels.the chevy trucks just seem to have less problems diesel/or other related problems.i drive around 150 plus miles a day mostly interstate.untill something better comes along i will stay with the duramax again no offense to any you guys have a nice day.
