OT Aluminum pulley on a steel shaft ?

I was working on a roof auger on a bin today. The steel shaft inside the auger broke loose from the weld and I need to take it apart and reweld it. The aluminum pulley is stuck tight on the shaft. I know that some kind of reaction happens between steel and aluminum and the 2 materials stick together. Any ideas how to get the pulley off? Can I heat the shaft next to the pulley to break it loose? Can you heat the pulley? How can I get the pulley off and save it? Chris

What you are thinking of is a galvanic reaction where dissimilar metals in contact with each other and the presence of water act like a battery and corrosion results. You should heat the pulley since aluminum expands more than steel. You will probably need a puller which you should have on and tightened before you start to heat. Perhaps it will start to move with out heat.

I think you best resign yourself to buying a pulley. If they're that bad that the corrosion has stuck them on, they're that bad that they'll crumble when you pull.
You can try. Slather it up in Fluid Film or some witches brew. It might come... but don't hold your breath.

If you do try heat, be very carefull not to get it too hot. Aluminum doesn't turn colors when it gets warm, it just all of a sudden runs out when it gets too hot and melts. Kinda weird if you're used to working with only steel.

I took two aluminum pulleys off this summer that had been on augers outdoors for twenty five years. Just heat the pulley with the puller ready to go. The aluminum expands fast, don't even have to get very hot. Pulleys were fine in the bore when I got them off.

There are seversl brands of antiseize products tokeep this from happening go to an electrical supply store for one sourse.

Yes, and a lot of those pulleys are not even aluminum, they are zinc or Zamac, which melts much quicker than aluminum.

Most powerheads will diassemble and take the pulley and shaft down togther. I have changed many bearings without removing the pulley.
