I plant about an acre of corn (merit). Have planted many years, this year about half of it had smutt on it can anyone tell me why? Anyway to stop it thanks.

Certain hybrids used to be susceptiple to that, but that was over 30 years ago- never been a big problem with major brands since then. Was a very devastating problem in the mid-late 70s in the north central corn belt, especially with one certain brand from SD.

Its thought to be a seed borne disease.I plant different varieties to get a spread out ripening time.I had a short row of Green Mountain potatoes that had 50% blight.Redsen and Satina were blight free in the next rows.Kennebec and Katahdin had a small amount of blight.Have not seen any smut in the corn this year.Kennebec potatoes were the best producers during a lousy garden year.

Smut, as a rule, is usually caused from something that has stressed the plant during growing season. Like hail or something along those lines. Some varieties are more suseptible than others.

it's a delicacy. in mexico called huitlacoche. sautee it with onions and olive oil. like mushrooms with a corny flavor.

glennster, you eat it first, then tell me how it works out!

Hey, what was the name of that mushroom again? Is it still out there? The one that grows on oak trees.

Thanks,Gene

gene, i gotta take a pass on the corn smutt as a delicasy. the mushrooms are sheepshead, or hen of the woods.

For what it is worth, we grew a small amount of corn and watered it at night. This was in Virginia. We got some smut. We don't water now except daytime hours and haven't had a problem
