Regular or Tractor Battery

Hi all,

I need to get a battery for a new to me Farmall 460 that I am working on. I have heard that "tractor" batteries are heavier duty than automotive batteries. I have a Diehard battery in my Ford 8N and it works great (plowing, discing, etc.), but was wondering if you think it is worth the extra money for the tractor rated battery.

Thanks in advance!

If you plan to use it in very cold weather, go for extra cranking amps. You didn't say if it's diesel or gas. Makes a difference.

I may be wrong, but it is my understanding that the "heavy duty" refers more to their construction to be able to withstand damage from vibration and jarring. It seems you can always buy an automotive battery with the same cranking amps for less. The warranty on the auto battery would probably be invalidated if it failed.

I have been using regular auto batteries with the highest CCA that I can find. The warranty on theses are 3 years compared to 1 year ag battery. If it does not hold up to the jaring and vibration I will take it back and replace it. JMHO.

Speaking of batteries, I went to start my p/u truck the other day and it started to crank then stopped. No lights, nothing. I popped the hood and touched the red (+) cable at the battery as it didn't look right. IT FELL RIGHT OFF! The electrode that the bolt screws into had come right out of the battery. It was a Delco battery, probably from when the truck was new (I bought it used). So much for "name brand" quality. Replaced it with a generic one from Meijers with higher CCA. I agree with Devin's comments.

Are tractor batteries bigger than auto batteries?
I noticed when I bought my Ford 3000 dsl that the battery tray is way bigger than the battery that was in it.

The largest battery that will fit the hole. You seldom regret that after it's paid for.
I'm quite fond of top stud group 31 truck batteries. They go into anything around here that they will fit... Good reserve, big CCA's and generally fairly economical.

Thanks everyone - I really appreciate the responses! I will go out and get a battery that has the highest CCA for the physical location. That is what I was leaning towards (since trucks/suvs can do a lot of bouncing as well and they seem to hold up fine). Thanks again!

I am still starting a 574 IHC tractor with a battery that came as original equipment on a 2000 Lincoln LS. I thought it was bad and the only replacement battery for this car was the Motorcraft. Other suppliers had not started making this battery as it had a vent hose on it like a motrcycle battery. Thr battery was located in the trunk of the LS

I have 3 Walmart batteries in use that have a 3 year free replacement. They're soon be in use 8 years. They cost about $75.00 with exchange. They have a 9 year warranty that's pro rated after the first 3 years. If they last another year that's about .69 cents a year for battery use. Hal

Had a side terminal battery do that the other day. Nut cast into terminal actually pulled out of terminal. Dealer replaced it free.
