O/T 1992 Buick (Update)

Ok I did everything we discussed, cleaned the throttle body, cleaned the MAF very carefully, put in a new air filter, hooked the battery back up and started it up. Ran much better, idled much better, still with a little stumbling but not nearly as bad... took it for a long test drive (almost 40 mins) got back home. Like I said still some stumbling... checked codes again and all I was getting was the 12 code over and over, no other codes. Should I try cleaning the MAF better or just get a new one? Thanks again in advance.

Try unplugging the MAF ,if runs better try new MAF . It will set a code when you unplug it . Have you checked fuel pressure yet ?

No I have not checked fuel pressure... I work a lot on Diesels not gas, and usually I use a mechanical gauge, is there a spot where I can tap into to check the fuel pressure?

Sorry, haven't been following your history, but again, just some suggestions:

That code 12 is a normal reading with the key on and engine off. Missing ignition reference signal. :>)

When I hear the word "stumble", my mind immediately goes to plugs or wires. Missing just once or twice on a cylinder away from a stop light?

Darned things had a little trouble with coil packs and ignition modules too.

Now, 'bout that darned MAF. When you say, "stumble", is it more of a bog feeling? Like you're temporarily running out of fuel for a couple of seconds?

I usually try to clean 'em just ONCE.

Sure sounds like you're getting close to this one. Let us know what ya find.

Yep,

I used to work on the trannys.

Can't tell ya how many times the "smart guys" with their little electronic gadgets would send one over to me because the "Torque converter is causing a stumble".

Every blessed time it turned out to be a simple faulty plug or wire. :>)

i learned that MOST of the time it's the simple things that give trouble. and they are most easy to check out and replace.

Amen!

They used to call me at home either in the middle of the night or on a Sunday and ask if I'd come in and overhaul a tranny for some folks traveling thru from out of town. Darned thing just wouldn't shift.

Folks were just flat stranded and sorry for calling at such a later hour, but they just didn't know what else to do.

Sooooooo,

I'd load up, go in and replace their silly fuel filter fer 'em. :>)

When I had a Chevy Citation I silver soldered a 1/8 pipe female fitting on the fuel line from the filter to the TBI after removing it and then I installed a 1/8 pipe nipple and drilled a hole into the gas line. After reinstalling the gas line I installed a 1/8 plastic gas line to the fitting and then to the gauge. Then I discovered why the engine would quit then restart right away. The fuel pressure would drop off and the engine would die. I pulled the gas tank and found the sock on the fuel pump inlet full of rust. I cleaned the tank and installed a new pump. No problems after that. Hal

I once replaced a distributor and carb on a pickup to stop an occasional stumble at high speeds. In the end, the EGR valve was burnt and allowed just enough exhaust to cause the stumble. Put a solid metal plate in place of the gasket to stop all flow and problem solved for 15 more years.

There should be a schrader fitting on the fuel rail by the intake . if not then you need adapter to TEE into where it hooks up to rail . Couple pounds low on pressure can make a difference . But like others said ,missfire from plugwires . You can usually tell if you power brake it and you feel the miss, or on test drive up slight grade and try to accelerate lightly .

I have an 89 Blazer with the 350 if my plug wires get out of order in the loom brackets it seems to induce a spark at the wrong time in an adjacent plug wire causing a stumble. Check that the plug wires are routed correctly.
