OT hot water heating plumbing question.

Have a boiler with baseboard heat. Also have a pellet stove in room addition. Pellets $ are thru the roof. Was thinking of adding a baseboard to the new room to tie into the existing system. With the slab construction, the only place to tie in is under the kitchen cabinet so I don't really want to use a torch under there.

Question: can I use compression fittings on a hot water heating system plumbing? (not steam)
Thanks!

I can't say yes or no. Compression fittings can be used on a water supply that can have a rated pressure of 100 PSI (city water top pressure) Your boiler is runnig somwhere around 15-30 PSI there should be a pressure limiter on the water supply where it connects to your boiler which should say what it's set at. There should also be a pressure guage on the boiler showing the current pressure. Unless someone can give a good reason or some Code that says you can't I would not hessitate to use a compression fitting on a hotwater baseboard system.

(quoted from post at 12:49:26 08/07/09) Have you looked into Pex? (Google it)

Good stuff!!! Still have to connect to the copper, but I think there are fittings for that also..

re-did my whole house last year & used plastic
( CPCV ) for both hot & cold very easy to work with just cut & glue & a lot cheaper than copper has to be cpvc not pvc for potable water

I have used compression fittings on hydraulic oil systems and water systems for years. And the hydraulic oil systems have seen 275F temps, that is with SS tubing and fittings. (Parker A-lok style)

check in the post concerning soldering copper (I think it was in the tool talk section)... someone mentioned connectors that I think are called "Shark Bite". I have bought them at Ace Hardware and at the Depot... used them on 3 different jobs. Was very skeptical at first, but they work GREAT and if you buy the little "wrench", you can even pull them apart for re-use. These connectors will join copper to copper, pex to pex, or pex to copper and are either straight or elbow. If you don't want to solder, I highly recommend these!!! ...d

IF I where you,,, I SURE would not use compression,,, what I would do is use copper, put it together and then, install it with a union fitting, that will keep the torch away from the wood,,

I have seen compression come apart in due time, and it's a mess, so it's your choice, but for me, I go for the Best,,, not the least Best either,

I believe you want to use PEX-ALUMINUM-PEX for hot water heat. Not just plain pex. It's been a while since I read up on it. But, I believe that's right.

Use Shark-Bite fittings. I have used them on hot water lines and cold with no problems. Can't see why it would not work in this situation as well.
