Give me a break!!

I am working on a Farmall Super MD (otherwise known as a very expensive project, but that's a different story). I am putting the engine back together from a total rebuild and realize the gasket kit I bought doesn't contain the front crankshaft seal. So I call my local CaseIH dealer and he tells me $148.00, after a pause I ask him if its gold plated and I get a chuckle from him. I kindly tell him there is no way in heck I am paying that much for a seal. One call to Napa, they cross the part number, $13.00, now that's more like it. Now who in there right mind would pay $148.00 for that seal???

Lucky it was a part you could get somewhere else. Bought some clutch parts for my Case 1294 last year. Little clutch fingers are $100 apiece.

Recently needed an idler pulley for my 990 mower conditioner.Of course it was a special design and is only available at case-IH,for $569. Meanwhile I've got 30 acres of hay ready to cut.Had to give in and buy it from them.

I was trying to find parts (clutch/flywheel) for our company's 1971 IH 4500A forklift. The clutch wasn't too bad,but when he (CASE IH parts guy) told me the flywheel was $1600.00, I almost fell off the stool!!! He says "let me make a call" and contacts his aftermarket supplier. We got it for $1000! Then a year later, I had to pull the engine out and overhaul it. Turns out our machine shop had an engine they'd rebuilt three years ago and the owner never came back and got it. We got that engine for $1500. It's almost a new forklift now compared to what it was.

What I love is disk mower parts. For years Kuhn made mowers for Nh and JD. My Kuhn when I bought it had red, yellow, and green parts on it. When my lift cylinder went bad after a few rebuilds there was no fixing it. I called the three local dealers. NH and JD were both about the same price, about $125 MORE than the same part from the Khun dealer.

While I support the local family owned dealer (only one left) when I can, I never buy any part with out checking at least 2 other places. There is an industrial bearing joint here that can cross any (even parcial) numbers and more often than not they are 1/3 the cost of dealers.

Yesterday bought a HP black ink $13.47 from Wall Mart. Had tried to buy a kit to refill mine but they didn't have any. A little later realized I had forgot something and was near another Wall Mart. While there decided to see if they had the refill kit, They didn't but I noticed the exact same refill I bought at the other store was $14.97, $1.50 higher. The stores are less than 5 miles apart.

Just more of the CASE IH JUNK. half A$$ Dealers and Service.our local dealer sold out to a relative that was allso a CASE IH dealer. The whole store might just as well Close There Door For Ever!MONROE TRACTOR / We have there Horseheads Store Closest.Parts Are Slow [ Around 20 Days To Get The Lower Radiator Hose,10 days to get some ruber bushings, ]Just what a joke.AND THEY WANT MORE Custmers. any more equipment we buy is going to be John Deere ! NO MORE CASE IH JUNK FOR US !O AND THE PRICES BETWEEN SEVERAL OTHER CASE IH DEALERS IS NEVER EVEN CLOSE TO THE OTHERS.

How about this. There are two Wal-Marts close to us (15 miles) but are in different counties. Bought something at one and we were going past the other walmart and needed to return it. I got more money back because they had a higher tax rate than where I bought it.

If Walmart has a locked in area, not much compitition, they don"t mind gouging. Actually most box stores do this, I would buy at an Autozone in one town but have them price match to another town and saved as much as $2 on a $20 purchase. Walmart does price matching but not with another Walmart, go figure.

For the most part, dealerships stick to gouging on parts you can't get elsewhere. But it never hurts to check around for aftermarket parts; in the case of gaskets the aftermarket versions are often better than OEM.

It also doesn't hurt to check the price of the same part at different dealerships. The manufacturer only sets the "suggested" price; dealers can charge whatever they wish.

I needed a rubber cup and 1 U joint cross for a CV joint for a Allis wheel loader.
Dealer only sells a complete drive shaft,$2000
I found the U joint local for $100.
A rubber swather roller brg cup from a case swather was a perfect fit for the cup i needed, cost $11.

The GM dealr wanted $700 for 1 piston out of a 6.5 GM diesel engine. I bought a set of 8 for less than that after market, same brand too.

No wonder they go belly up.

At work we make an exhaust stack for JD for the 5000 series tractor. Just a 2 3/4 tube, with the bend/angle cut , 2 dimples, 4 slots and inlet end sized down. Overall, 41.7 inches long. Takes about a minute to make, about $5 in materials. Looked it up on their website, $150!

I Bought two new needles for my IH 46 Baler (don't ask) $239.00 ea. BUMMER
the same thing for a New Holland is $99.00 ea.
I just picked up a New Holland Baler Thank God for that.

Back in the day, when it was IH and not Case/IH, it seemed that if you could buy the part somewhere else, IH was at least competitive in price. On bolts, we could buy them retail from IH cheaper than "wholesale" from Lauson or Parts Associates. But if the part was an IH "proprietary" part, and no competitor had it, you could rest assured it cost an arm, a leg, and your left testicle.

Nowadays, it seems like Case/IH doesn't care about pricing the stuff you can buy elsewhere competitively.

One of my favorite battery powered wall clocks quit working. No luck finding movement at Ben Franklin. Tried a jewelry store and they could order one for me for $25. Declined that offer. Found one online for $2.78

Yeah, I seem to remember a similar situation with an M. Can't remember exactly what part it was, but it was waaaay higher at the dealer.

I was given a price of $98.00 for a ford oil pan gasket by CNH. I ended up getting one for $9.80 and used some gasket sealer with it. The oil pan is part of the structure and it has been stressed but no leaks yet.
