Repair manuals

Most of the questions on this forum are answered in the proper repair books. I cannot imagine trying to restore a machine without the right books..
Almost all books are available.

I agree 200 percent, The first thing i do is try and find a manual for what ever i am going to work. Pass on the word.

I'm trying to decide if you're serious or trolling. Yes, good manuals are indispensable, but to say "most of the questions on this forum are answered in the proper repair books" is an open invitation to flame.

My dad always liked to point out a picture in the shop manual for his D8-14A Cat. It showed a guy in a lab coat guiding the master link of the track over the upper rollers with a bar stuck through the hole in the link. Ignoring the fact that nobody ever works on D8 in a lab coat, the only reason they were even able to take the picture was that the link was conveniently resting on one of the rollers!

Manuals are good. Factory shop manuals are great. But the experience assembled here on YTMag is STUPENDOUS!

certain things you cant learn from manuals. I work on equipment everyday.and have helped a few folks on here and have had the favor returned. Some stuff just aint in the book and a guy cant know everything.

Not sure of your motivation for this posting. Either way, I agree with you to a point. When I buy something the first thing I do is aquire a manual for it. That being said, there is no substitute for hands on experience. Case in point....try doing a clutch for the first time on a Farmall H without splitting it. The manual will be of almost no help while the experience here will be priceless. There are many other examples. When approaching a repair I havent tackled before, I first look at the manual and then call a buddy who has done it before. There is "book smarts" and there are "street smarts". There are college educated people out there that arent smart enough to come in out of the rain. There are also people that couldnt count their fingers and come up with the same number twice that can look at something....imediately understand how it works and come up with a good plan to make it work better. Lucky are the people who are somewhere in between.

hmm...great theory. But have you ever tried to diagnose a problem from an I&T manual. They will show you how to take every nut and bolt out of a unit, but to diagnose problems they aren't much better than a roll of TP. I appreciate every question and response I read on this forum. I have learned a lot and have had the pleasure of helping and being helped. There is also something about saving a buck. Many, well at least myself, find it quick and cost effective to double check with the knowledge base on this forum and save a dollar. Don't get me wrong I have over 50 I&T manuals and many service manuals as well as a owners manual for everything I own. But the largest data base is right here.

Yes it is good to have the books, but even better to have the knowledge. Example if I go by the book on and old Army M35 cargo truck on changing the starter. It will take about two and a half hours the book way. My way I can do it in 45 minutes. People that wrote the book are not always the ones doing the work.I agree about the IT manuals not very good in some ways.

But wouldn't it be nice to have an idiot proof series like the Army TM's for every piece of equipment you own?????? I almost bought a mid 80's Chevy 4x4 just for that reason

Then I found my pride........
