clutch problems

Hello - I just bought an old Massey Harris Mustang tractor and it has clutch problems. The problem is that if I try to move the gear shifter it just grinds the gears and it won"t go into gear. I can start the tractor in gear and drive it and I can use the clutch pedal to make it go in and out of gear, but I can"t use the gear shifter. I can use the gear shifter if the motor is not running. I tried adjusting the clutch linkage. Is my clutch worn out or is it the release bearing ? If I need new parts where could I buy them ? - Dean

Most likely the clutch is stuck you need to open up the bottom cover and then see if it is moving the throw-out bearing is actually pressing on the pressure plate if so then with the engine off have someone press the clutch pedal in then with a soft hammer or a brass drift tap the side of the pressure plate to get the clutch to release.

i am betting on your transmission input shaft that goes into your pilot bushing is dry or if is a ball-bearing it could be bad-- might end up splitting it either way

Hi Walt - You wre right! :D I never would have thought that the clutch would be stuck but it makes sense since the motor was also stuck. I've got the motor running good now. I took a look at the clutch and sure enough it is stuck so I will need to spend some time there too. Thanks a lot, you saved me some time!
