I have not been able to access my account for about 10 days finally found a back way to get to it. I checked the junk file and there are some messages sent to me with my email account name and messages with Russian sounding names. What do I do?

A little more information would help. Are you talking about a free account like hotmail or gmail? Or an account with your ISP?

First thing is to change your password to something nobody will guess.

Hotmail. Change Password, I don't know why I didn't think of that. Thanks [not sarcasm]
Ron

Make sure your password isn't in the dictionary. Adding a digit or using mixed case (if hotmail recognizes mixed case) will help. Once you change your password, you need to do damage control. You need to check out anything associated with your email address, such as bank accounts, credit cards, eBay, etc. There's a good chance one or more of those has been compromised as well.

like mark said change your password, what i did is pick something nobody will guess like the name of a dog you had as a kid, then for doubble security delibertly misspell the word, i had the same thing happen and my email was being used to spam russian porn sites, i got some of them myself sent to me, you may have to contact your email provider and set up a new account

Someone somehow was able to hack into mine. Yahoo warned me about the content of email. When I went into sent mail there was all kinds of crap. I changed the password to miss spelled words with numbers inserted and have not had anymore problems.

Ron,

I am not a Hotmail user, so I'm not the best person to ask this quesion. I assume you've already tried the "Forgot your Password" link on the Hotmail site. I suppose that link will prompt you for answers to "private" questions that only you should know.

One thing I realized after going to hotmail.com is that Hotmail now uses "Windows Live" IDs. Are you sure whether you're using your old Hotmail ID and password or a Windows Live ID and password? You may have created a Windows Live ID without realizing it just by accessing another Microsoft web site. I know that the MS Live Meeting and the MS Developer's Network both require Live IDs.

Note that just because you can't log into your email and you have some spam doesn't mean your account has been compromised. But until you get back in you don't know for certain.

The password reset systems that prompt you for answers to private questions are notoriously insecure. It's just not that difficult to figure out someone's so-called personal information, such as data of birth, mother's maiden name, or school name. You may recall that someone easily broke into Sarah Palin's Yahoo account, since the answers to those questions were all common knowledge.

This is one hazard of using a free email account: You have no way to prove you are the owner of your account.

Try looking at the information in this link:
Windows Live Help

Mark I don't know much about this stuff but every time I try to sign in the computer takes about a minute and says Time Out, the connection is taking to long. IT does the same thing with everything to do with MSN.
Ron

Ron,

Again, I'm not the best person to answer, since I avoid all things Microsoft except when work requires it.

Since you say you're having problems with all MSN, I'd say you have a Windows Live ID problem. Are you actually going to hotmail.com to log in via the web? Or are you using a local email agent like Outlook Express.

You should be able to log into your account, or reset your password at the Windows Live link below.
Windows Live login
