66 Dodge 2 ton

I plan go look at a 66 dodge 2-ton farm truck that is for sale. The engine is okay but the rest of the truck will need a few repairs I'm sure. A few of items of concern will be tires, steering and brakes. I know that a person can get a small fortune wrapped up in tires, but what about mechanical parts? Is there still a good selection of repair parts for a truck this old?

Most of the parts that just wear out are available at Napa but hard to get things like windshield and trannies and rearends are hard to find. Remember its 42 years old.
I have a 68 Saab Sonett and parts are real hard to come by.

I've got absolutely nothing against Dodge trucks, but a Ford or Chevy of that same vintage will be a breeze to find parts for. Yes, even body parts and glass. Bust out a windshield on that Dodge and the truck will most likely be just setting again.

Patience and time. Okay its running, is the gas tank full of rust. Radiator same. Go for it. Only pay enough if you have to scrap it, won/'t be too bad. Dave

Got a '67 D500 (318/4speed/2speed) sitting in the back lot; my dad bought it new; got a 350 bu. home-made metal bed. It's been pretty much bullet-proof. Never needed parts I couldn't find at the local parts house; of course, a major drive-line component failure would probably cost more to fix than the thing's worth.

where are you located? I have a 1975 D600 with a wooden bed, any where from 275 to 300+ bu. with fold down stock rack, 14 tON harsh hoist, practally new Firestone traction grip duels and practially new front tires. Fairly new carb and rebuilt vacum brake booster. 360 Eng, 4 + 2 Transmission Very little rust and good solid cab. I used it in mt farming operation and I rented the farm out 4 years ago and I do not need the truck any more. I used it last year to haul 1 load of mulch to my step son. I have always kept it in side out of the weather. As for as I know the truck is ready to go to work.

A windshield is not that hard to come by for the Dodge if you are knowledjable. At least not any harder then a Ford or Chevty of thet year.
I have been around a long time and never busted a windshield out, and we get a lot of hail here.

I still run a 65 Dodge grain truck on my farm along with several others as old as 59.

I question if it is any harder to find medium duty Dodge parts than any other brand.
Their are lots of reproduction parts for GM and Ford, but only through one ton.
For 1-1/2 ton or larger, your pretty much restricted to salvage yard parts for any brand, with Generic driveline parts from the auto parts store.
I am lucky enough to have a local auto parts store that can access several sources of obsolete parts. They got me master, wheel cylinders and all brake hoses for my 59 model IH 1600 last year.

The medium duty Fords and Chevys, and probably Dodge as well, use the same cab and glass as the light duty pick-up trucks, but since there are a lot more Fords and Chevys out there, the selection and availabilty of both used and reproduction sheetmetal is greatly increased. Once you get past the sheetmetal and engine, everything else in a meduim duty truck is sourced from companies such as Eaton, New Process, etc., and is more or less interchangeable.
