Hi, My 14 year old wants to restore a tractor. other than the cub which seems to be a fad now what"s a small tractor I could look for that he might get started in this hobby with for reasonble price? Cub"s are like corvettes and he has no real favorite just a size restriction we only have 5 acres to play on pulling firewood etc. Any suggestions?

A 9n or 8n would be a great project tractor . Plus the history behind them is outstanding .HTH ! God bless

depends on which is his favorite brand of tractor, they all had their good, an their bad points, of course john deere had more good then bad.
anyhow as being your first tractor i would recommend a common make an model, so you will not have that much problem with finding parts, such as a farmall H or john deere B. both are smaller rowcrops that you could play with.
that way you will have you part sources an a idea where to look for parts. also there are alot of people that have worked on the more common ones that could help you with problems.
just my 2 cents worth

ken is right the little N series ford would be great to get him started, there cheap to buy, [ a complete non runner as low as a few hundred] virtually every part is avalible right here on this site including all the manuels , so he wont spend huge amounts of time reashearching and tracking down any hard to find or expensive parts theyre simple tractors to work on, remember these fords when new were intended to be run and repaired by a farmer used to using horses to farm with, and he can either sell it or put it to work when he's done with it

What do you mean "cubs are like corvettes"? There is NOTHING wrong with restoring a cub.

Something that already runs and needs more cosmetic restoration than anything else.Paint is cheaper than gears.

John Deere M
Massey Harris Pony
Allis Chalmers B

Nothing wrong at all I'd love one but in new england people think they are worth way more than any other tractors and maybe they are but they are out of a kids price range even with parental help. Like a vette!!

A Farmall H is the perfect tractor for an acreage of 5 acres. The H is more plentiful than a Cub, just as easy to work on, parts are VERY easy to find, and it is capable of doing more work while not using very much, if any, more fuel.

Start out small with some type of lawn or garden tractor and if that proves successful the interest is set. I see parked or fence line models of all kinds of rejects waiting for a little tlc in drives around the country and this is Arizona. Not many Lawns or farms around here.If you live east of the rocky mts. there is an enormous amount of misc machinery available if you spend a little time looking for it and asking about it.JH

id stay away from case i have one dc and three jd's i can rebuild all three jd's for the price of that one case not to mention parts are hard to find for a case in the aftermarket this is just my experience though best bet is to look at what dealers are in your area easier to get parts from the dealer in most instances any old tractor is a good time

That would be my pick, an H. I grew up on H's and an AC-B. First tractor I ever drove on my own was an H and was about 8. There are too many B's out there already, and I got one to mow the lawn with. In my humble opinion, an H is just what the doctor ordered and parts are available. Saw one setting out by Garver Lake Tavern yesterday, first one I ever saw in my life that was yellow, but it sure was an H looking for a new good home. Yellow? I wonder how that happened.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the obvious, a Farmall A or even better, a Super A (or one of the later series like a 130 or a 140)

The A/SA is a bit bigger then a Cub but 3 times the tractor. It's still small enough that you can tuck it away in the spare space in a garage.

There's a lot of them out there too. An H would be nice if you had the space. A B/BN is in the same class as an A but much wider so it takes up a lot more space.

Next in line, at least for me would be an AC B.

Fords can't really be beat as far as availability and the size of land you have. I would stick to something that had either a 3 point or some kind of lift on the back. Much more versatile. Around here 1-2000 will have you a running N and usually with some attachments. A wd or wd45 come to mind as well. Letter series are great tractors but don't have a 3 point. You can get one for under 800 bucks and usually used for 2-400. Also look for something with a loader. Very very handy.

I have an M and a trip bucket loader and have just shy of 1 acre. It's too big for me here at a total investment of around $300 including purchase price and parts to make it useable again it fit the bill nicely. Ford and Farmall are my vote. Plentiful with lots of parts availablitly. 3rd would be an Allis and 4th JD and 5th Case. JD and Case will be pricey to work on.
