cheap housing for farmers...

Hey,
You folks are missing out. Just saw an episode of dirty jobs where they built houses (nice ones too) from straw, mud, and cow sh!t as stucco. Claimed 13 bucks a sq ft for the completely finished house.

Are they up to
the the Southern Building code? Can they withstand 120mph winds? What would the inspectors say? Has the cow manure got a green cow stamp. Was the straw raised under the new epa standards?

Just a ew of the requirement needed to build in the south USA Henry

Guess it compares to straw bale construction. Walls looked to be about 18 inches or more thick. They were building somewhere in the States. Not important and I didn't mean to put anyone on the defense. OTH, theres a house around the corner from that's about 900 years old that still has some of the original mud (clay?) and straw plaster.

(quoted from post at 07:07:00 05/31/09) Cow sh!t. Hmm some things smells about this

Said it has to be fresh also, something about enzymes making it stick/hold better. Supposed to loose the smell in a couple of weeks, but just think of everytime it rains.......

I saw that Dirty Jobs; It was pretty interesting.

As for alternative building materials, there's a guy near me who built a modern home out of mortar and firewood. He even has a complete photo journal of the construction which he did almost entirely himself (start at the bottom of the page and work up).
