German Tractor ( Lanz Bulldog)

The Bulldog was one of the most popular German tractors, with over 250,000 of them produced in its long production life
The Lanz Bulldog was manufactured by Heinrich Lanz AG in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Production started in 1921 and various versions of the Bulldog were produced up to 1960.
The Bulldog was a two-stroke hot bulb single horizontal cylinder engine. Initially the engine was a 6.3 litre, 12 horsepower unit, but as the Bulldog evolved this was increased to 10.9 litres and 54 horsepower inexpensive, They were simple and easy to maintain tractor. While hot bulb engines were crude , they were easy to maintain and could burn a wide variety of low grade oils –even waste oils.

ive heard that they were good tractors but huge single cylinder would shake you to death under a load

Bob You are absolutely right John Deere did purchased Lanz in 1956 and started using the name "John Deere Lanz" for the Lanz product line. A few years after the Bulldog was discontinued, in 1960 the Lanz name was dropped

My father used to tell me you could hear those coming from a ways off.He said the banging of the single cylinder was quite loud.
Thanks for the pictures

It is the same factory, Deere & co brought it to be able to manufacture on that side of the Atlantic, to supply a high market forcast in Europe and the British Isles, they had been refused permission to build in England (material shortages) If your John Deere tractor serial number starts with "L" it is a product of the old Lanz plant. I have just containerised 2 D8506 40hp Bulldogs with 10,338cc engines for shipment to Rotterdam, there were a lot of Bulldogs exported over here, there are supposedly 17 in the township where I live, you can hear them coming from a long way off!

Yes it is, and I would not like to buy one now. The only Express Bulldogs I have seen were in a meuseam near Hidelburg in Germany about 20 years ago. The 2 I containerized last week were bog standard agric tractors of 40hp, they were sold by auction about a year ago and reached approx NZ$ 40k each unrestored and not running, they have been waiting for approval to ship overseas by the heratage council of New Zealand.
