Ford 850 keeps cutting off

ford 850 keeps cutting off after idling for sometime 10 minutes or so or when you take it up to PTO RPM's. Have swapped out coil, condensor, points, rotor, plugs, all electric & still nothing. Also re-routed fuel line away from exhaust manifold thinking possible vapor lock. It starts back up right away but does the same thing again. Any ideas out there?

How does it look in your fuel bowl? Is there crud in there? How about the other screens in the fuel system. It sounds like it starves for fuel, shuts off, refills, and then you can run it again.

no fuel or sediment bowl, just an in-line fuel filter & I just replaced it. Fuel tank valve is wide open. Fuel line from bottom of tank runs across new fuel line to the in-line filter & then straight to one side of the carb. Not aware of any other screens

When the fuel line is disconnected and the valve open, do you get good fuel flow or does it just trickle out? Might want to use a bowl or something to catch it :)

Disconnect the fuel line at the carburetor and see if there a full stream of gas from the hose could be something in the hose blocking the flow. The stream should be about the same after drinking 12 beers. Use a clean container to catch the gas. If there's a full stream of gas from the fuel line check the carburetor inlet for a screen that may be full of crud blocking the gas. Hal

You have to check for fuel flow as has been described. Then pull the carburetor inlet adapter. There generally is a screen on it inside the carburetor and those do get plugged.

Fuel lines also can fill with varnish and restrict flow.

An inline fuel filter made for a car works badly on a tractor with gravity flow. Take it out. Find one specifically made for gravity flow.

It might be that inline filter. There are inline filters made for gravity flow but if its one for a fuel pump system it might not be letting the gas through. When it dies you want to check if it has spark right then. One thing I didnt see that you mentioned replacing was the ignition switch.Thats stuff I see a lot of times as an answer for something like that.
If you check for spark as soon as it dies would tell you if it was electrical or not.Say you didnt have spark, then you jumped the switch and it fired up would tell you it was the switch. If you dont have fuel, you may want to get the system back to original with a sediment bowl and the screens rather than the inline filter that might not let fuel through fast enough.

Unless that in line filter is made for a gravity flow fuel system you stand about a 99% chance that is your problem. Most fuel filters are made to run with 7psi plus and you do not have that. You would not believe how many case of beer I have gotten just to throw them away. Yep that is my charge to fix the in line filter problem for people

On the bottom of the tank the fuel shut off valve has two bolts the shutoff valve has a screen on it that sticks up into the tank. empty tank take off old shutoff valve clean or replace don't forget the o-ring hope that helps you jer

Next time it does that jump off real quickly and check the spark. It should be FAT AND BLUISH-WHITE, the color of lightning. If it's not or if it's non-existent, you found the problem. Do you have a 6v or a 12v system? If you have a 12V system, do you have a real 12V coil( like NAPA IC-14SB)? You could also have a bad key switch or a bad connection. Some of the Ford distributors had an insulator that the primary wire was attached to in the distributor that shorts out.
If you have the requisite spark then check the fuel flow to the carb to make sure that you have a good supply to the carb. If you have a drain plug on the bottom of the carb, open it up and hold a conatiner under the carb. The fuel should continuously gush out like a cow peein' on flat rock. If it dribbles or is intermittent find out why.

thanks for all the feedback, this is great info. I will try & answer all the questions that have come up on the forum regarding the tractor.
The tractor is a 12V system, suspect converted. The coil is a 12V. Previous owner had ignition switch problems, so I will check that. Also plan to check fuel line & screens & order a sediment bowl & get rid of the in-line fuel filter. I have emptied the fuel tank twice & both times the stream is solid nutil the tank is almost empty, will check it at the end of the fuel line as well. Hopefully I answered all of the great questions you all had. I will work on it this weekend & keep you all posted.
