International A

I have an International A. I am having a problem establishing the year of the tractor. The serial number is 221944 witch would indicate that it was built after 1947, but the date codes on the parts end with :O. Can anybody help me?

Where are you getting your serial number from, the chassis tag under the seat or from the motor? If from the motor that's kind of an odd number for an A of any stripe. Is there a prefix in front of it?

You're in a bit of a spot with that info.

From the books I have, the chassis serial number you give is higher than the last of the As and lower than the first of the SuperAs. If the first digit of the numerics you gave was a "one" instead of a 2, that would be about right for 1945.

An International A would have had chassis prefix of IAA, not AAI.

I'd suggest two things. Clean up the plate under the seat and look at it with a strong light. Also, check your motor serial number. It will take some cleaning up, but can be found at the top right edge of the block, on a flat machined spot just below the front, #1 plug. Likely very dirty, and partially obscured by the throttle rod going to the governor. Get that number to go with the other, and maybe we can figure out what you've got.

You're welcome!

That's a little more enlightening. With the numbers you now have, it's likely a Louisville-built A. On Louisville tractors, the chassis and engine serial numbers didn't always match.

That still leaves us with the casting code, and I just wonder if, with a little cleaning up, those Os might actually turn out to be Qs, which would be right for '47.
