I have the chance to buy a jd 4520 powershift from a local farmer. The tractor is complete, but has hydraulic issues as well as a bad knock in the engine. I probably could get the tractor at a good price, but I would like to get some opinions on if I should or should not take on this restoration project.

What do you call a good price ? Those don't bring alot in decent shape anyhow. Maybe 1/2 of a 4020 ? I'm sure engine repairs are really expensive. A good chance the brakes are out plugging up the hyd. screen and then once you go in to fix the brakes you may just find the plantary's bad. That's the story of how my cousins 6030 went.

You should wait a bit longer all prices are going to bottom out very soon with all the bottom dwellers now in DC ! A bad know in a engine on a tractor that old pretty much says salvage price duh.

Unless you are an experienced Deere tech or have more money than most---RUN, don't walk.A good buy in my opinion would $1,000. The knock could be from the hydraulic pump drive since the tractor has hydraulic issues and if caused by the brake pads disentrigation, its possible every hydraulic component would need to be rebuilt.I would want the advice of an experienced Deere tech before buying it as to what the engine knock is.

The owner had it sitting at a red dealership for about 6 months to see if someone may pick it up for scrap for around $2000. He told me a while back that he would sell it to me for less if I was interested. I would probably offer $500 and I think he may take it.

what town was the red dealer in ??
I am wondering if this is the one i talked to a guy about and scared him about replacing or rebuilding the engine lol.

The bottoming out was predetermined even before the election. Ain't no way we are getting out without hurting. The deregulation started by Nixon and continued by every president since has caused this. nnalert jumped on the band wagon too. Reagan did the most damage. Take a look at FDR's 1932 inauguration speech. It would apply today in the same way. Money changers have taken over and were a glut and are destroying even themselves because of greed.
