Mixing feed with a portable cement mixer

Has anyone done this? I have a good hammer mill but no way to mix the feed. We have an old electric cement mixer and I'd like to try to use it. I only use a few hundred pounds a week, so its limited capacity wouldn't be a problem. Thanks in advance.

It will work just fine. It's only limitation as you said will be the capacity. I know some pretty fancy feed operations that mix minerals (home brewed) this way. You'll just need to know the total pounds the mixer will hold so as to get the right proportions of ingredients mixed on a per batch basis. Go for it.

Wesley, 4Hers and FFAers have been doing this for years. As randallinMo said the capacity or lb/mixing will be your limitation.

Just make sure the rocks are cleaned out and don't get in the feed! We made a small PTO drive feed mixer years ago using combine bin and elevator from a old Massey Harris clipper combine and added a couple cross augers to mix it a bit more.

The way we done when I was younger[60 yrs.ago]
we put in flat bed wagon in layers and scooped in the mill and let mill mix it.

Did you run it thru the mill with wet molasses??

I had thought of finding a cement mixer...I dont have the space or need for a grinder mixer yet....maybe if the herd gets bigger...

I run my grain thru a hammermill into a bin then clean a spot on the floor and mix in my protein, salt, and molasses with a shovel then bag it....little manual labor wont kill me for now.....

You'll be surprised how well it works...

We mix in bone-meal for chicken feed as animal proteins are no longer allowed in the mills.

You can also mix your grass seed as well.
