Deer Damage

I know this belongs in crop talk but;

I have three peach saplings that was scraped by a buck. Two look ok but one, it's pretty bad no bark on the trunk. Any body got ideas, I hate to see hard work and money go down the drain.

This time of year, it would be difficult if not impossible to make it take a bridge graft. I would use chemical deer repellent on the remaining trees and consider the other one a loss.

I spent last Mon-Fri hunting deer when I should have been doing outside good weather jobs.Last night the wife and I hit one on the road with the van. Weather forecast is rain and snow for the next week.

A girdled tree is the same as dead. BUT it might send up another leader- -You might wait and see what happens next year.

I've used 4 ft high fence curled into a 2 1/2 ft cylinder and stake it around each tree you really care about. Takes a lot of effort. But it works.

When the tree out-grows the cage, then use a spray bottle and mix your stinkiest cologne with water and give the tree a few squirts each week. That seems to work better than many other things that I've tried. And it's a lot easier too.

If peaches are grafted like apples are, the leaders will be sent up by root stock and not produce the fruit variety expected.

We hit a deer with our Chrysler T&C about two hours ago. My wife was driving and I was in the passenger seat. At one point, the deer was a good 6 feet in the air.

All I can find on the van is the hood is history and the bolt-in upper radiator support is slightly bowed.

We have trouble with deer messing up trees, also. I have several bottles of after-shave I bought and didn't like. I never thought about spraying trees with that. I'll give it a try.

ive had some sucess with making a circle around the tree with hog wire fencing, make it so that the deer cant reach the tree by leaning over the fence, but close enough to the tree so they wont risk jumping over the fence either, also i used 6 t posts set in a circle around the tree and ran 30 lb test fishing line around the tree on the posts about 10 times top to bottom,[ i didnt have any wire fencing on hand] apparently they cant see the fishing line but they hit it and dont know what it is, and it spooks them

Had this myself best cure I found is .22 cal. in the head, have meat with the veg.Has worked for me, screw F&G their not the ones feding them year round.

Folks down south where the Alps start have to put a jacket of boards around their trees (even in their frt yards) and cover shrubs, hedges and bushes in winter. Deer and other animals loose all since of fear when snow starts flying. They'll go right into communities where folks are walking around when it gets real bad.

Join the club. I planted two cherry trees this year and a buck tore one of them right out of the ground. Last year I planted two apple trees at our other farm and one tore both of them up. This year they got about 4 of my white pines shredded. I can't figure it out either. They have at least a million willow and popular trees to rub on down there and they always ruin the new ones that I try to grow. Next week I will have my revenge on them. Deer season starts saturday. The people we bought that farm from said there were 4 bucks out eating the corn and apples by their house this week. Very destructive creatures that is for sure.

i have a bunch of fruit trees and some willows i planted along my creek, just outside of a stand of timber on my farm. between the deer scraping them and the beavers munching on them, i ended up putting fencing around each tree. i used 4 ft welded wire fence and 4 t-posts around each tree. been working real good . havent lost any trees since i fenced em. fence is abut 2 ft away from the trees, far enough to keep the beaver away, close enough so the deer cant jump over it. seems like fall is the worst time for damage.

What kind of guns do you have? Wich ever is closest will work. I like the 20 gauge my self.

Or like mtuck said, 22 to the head, acuret, and quiet.

Several years ago I was in Estes Park Colorado. Saw a man in his PJ's chaseing a huge bull elk out of his yard with a broom. The elk are destroying all the trees in the area. There is a distint browse line around the edges of the forests. We went to an "elk viewing" one evening put on by the park service. All the crowd must have been tree huggers. When I ask the park service man about the obvious animal damage and did they allow hunting to control the herd, they all looked at me like I was an ax murderer or something.

I know how to get rid of the six point (venisoin, steaks, can the rest. I can all most taste him). My question is what can be done about the tree, since i think its going to die any way I am thinking about grafting it with an alberta peach, but it might die any way (both the deer and the tree) because its kinda big, 2 years old and about the size of a broom handle. It should have beared next year.

Thanks to all for replies.

A rabbit got all the way around a small tree a couple years back. Dad grabbed the first thing he could find- Duct Tape. He wrapped it up good and guess what? The tree is still living. Kinda surprised it worked, but it's worth a shot.
