8N Carburator Problem

My '49(?) Ford 8N tractor (front distributor) quit on me, and I saw that gas was running out of the bottom of the carb lower body. Closer inspection revealed a recessed screw had fallen out. I removed the lower body, and reinstalled with a temporary plug, but now misses badly. Can anyone tell me what that part is? - either it was not simply a drain plug, or I reassembled something wrong.

The missing screw is in the center of the lower body, LEFT of the larger drain screw that faces to the rear of the engine (air intake). Please see the picture I posted to the 'Identify' gallery.

Apprec any help!

I think there is a porus plug that's supposed to drain excess fuel out of the air horn of the carb if it floods. I don't believe there is a screw there. SInce your carb is flooding, recheck your float setting. The M-S carbs are eally sensitive to that.

If you have a engine miss, check your spark first. It should be FAT, AND BLUISH-WHITE. if you have that, then recheck your carb adjustments.
P.s. You'll get more responses on the N forum rather than here.

Thanks, Jerry! - I re-posted on the N forum ...

BTW, it was not 'flooding' - it was 'leaking', out of the hole where the screw fell out ... I will check the float, but I simply removed the lower bowl, plugged the hole, and put it back on. Should not have messed with the spark, as it was running fine just before it quit.

That is not a screw but an anti flood sort of part. Its a brass screen that lets gas out but keep dirt out. If you plug it you will cause more problems then you even think about fixing

It's a sintered bronze filter that lets gas leak OUT when the carb "floods", but keeps most dirt OUT.

The Marvel-Schebler part # is 95-78.

Believe it or not, the John Deere parts system recognizes that number. (The same filter was used on some DEERE products.)

When I need one, I just have the Deere dealer order one in. Just over $4.00, and no freight if I can wait a few days for their next stock order.

My GUESS is that the filter falling out had nothing to do with your immediate problem, and that the tractor "flooded out", and now has a couple of fouled spark plugs.

You need to get a filter back in there, though, to let excess gas drain OUT, and keep dirt from being sucked IN.

It is flooding because there should not be any fuel around that part of the carb. It is not connected to the fuel bowl. Its purpose is to drain flooded gas.

OK, many thanks, guys! - I guess it's off to the local John Deere dealer, to try to order another one ... failing that, a new carb is about $120.
