A friend called me about a Chevy or GMC ( I can't remember which ) 2005 3/4 Ton pickup. It has 25,000 miles is a 4 door work truck, diesel, allison auto trans and is very nice. I would value your opinions, It can be bought for 19-20K.
What kind of milage is expected, loaded and empty, is it reliable and etc. Thanks in advance you guys.

Depending on axle gearing, some get 14 MPG empty on highway trips and some get 20 MPG.

I've got two neighbors with 1 ton, single wheel, two-door Duramax 4WD trucks. One is a 2003 and the other 2005. Both have Allisons. Both constantly complain and both say they they've never gotten better than 16 MPG. It's kind of funny since both kept their old diesel "rust bucket" trucks and use them now for around town stuff and light work. One guy still has his 93 Dodge with a 5 speed manual that he says always gets 20-21 MPG on the highway. The other guy is still driving his 1982 Chevy with a 6.2 and four-speed manual.

By the way, the newest Duramax was recently tested - dual wheels and four doors and it got a best of 18 MPG. Not sure what axles it had but I know it was set up for heavy towing.

I have a 2004 GMC 2500HD w/ Duramax & Allison combo. With a K&N air filter ands no other modifications I consistently get 18-20mpg unloaded. If I keep my foot out of it on highway I can pull 22-23 mpg with no load. Mpg with a load varies between 11-16mpg (Hauling that dozer really eats fuel). Second Duramax I have owned. Will not own another gas truck if I can help it. Price sounds reasonable.

Forgot to mention. Most Duramax/Allison combinations came with 3.73 gears only from the factory. That is what I am running for gearing but did change tires to 285/75/16 lt load range E. Better ride than the stock tires. Both of mine were/are just about bulletproof. Just make sure you have the fuel filter changed every 10-12k miles and follow the maint. schedule.
Hope this helps

That's actually low miles...these are good trucks...I love my 04. thinks to look for:
steering shaft clunk right from the factory, on 4wd the front hub bearings go at 70-80k at about $600 a pop, puny 245/75-16 should be swapped the minute you get it ( i went 285, 265 probably a better bet for most). I get an average of 17.5 based on the computer ( mostly stop and go 95) and about 16 loaded with 9k lb trailer on it.
Oh yeah- if ANYTHING funky starts to happen to driveability, from engine surge to funky shifting, swap the fuel filter and it will usually solve it!

Starting on January 1, 07 the LBZ was dropped and the LMM replaced it. If you're running them hard enough they don't have to regenerate the DPF (diesel particulate filter) in the exhaust. If not and it has to do an active regeneration, I've heard people complain of 10 to 12 mpg.
The LMM engine is easy to spot. They have a megaphone like tail pipe on them.
