1996 ram 2500 2wd with a 360 gas auto tranny,,,,, Been having trouble with it shifting into 3rd from second,,, Id let off it and it shifts and holds,,,, Now, it wont shift out of low at all in any gear selection. Speed Sensor gone out???? Check engine light came on,, and had a bad battery connection,,,, fixed the battery, but the light has not came back on,,, but wont shift out of low at all. Its not slipping, fluid is good. Any suggestions would be great, but thinking its the SS. Thanks! Chad

My 97 1500 did the same thing. I was told to clean some valve body in mine by a service manager friend(non dodge). Had a tranny shop try it. A used trans install was the final solution in my case. It just got worse until it was leaking fluid from the seams.

I have had that exact same problem for several years now. Stuck in 2nd and delayed to 3rd. comes and goes can't make it do it. letting off the gas usually lets it go on into gear.
My efforts at finding the problem all told me a seal in the 2nd pack leaks and won't build enough pressure to go to 3rd. Tranny needs rebuilt. I have put off the rebuild and have so far lived with it. Sounds like now yours has crapped out and needs the rebuild ?

You can cycle the key on and off and read the trouble codes that way.
Here is the procedure:

Cycle the ignition key On - Off - On - Off - On within 5 seconds.
Count the number of times the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT on the instrument panel flashes on and off. The number of flashes represents the trouble code. There is a slight pause between the flashes representing the first and second digits of the code. Longer pauses separate individual two digit trouble codes.

Once you get a code post it and I can see what I can find.

Are you sure it is in drive and not second gear. It may appear that it is in drive from the selector but may actually be in 2nd gear because of worn mounts and linkage out of adjustment.

The delayed 2-3 shift is common. Like said below, the inner lip seal on the direct drum is undersized and loses contact with the apply piston, giving you a real crappy 2-3 sometimes and other times it seals ok and shifts fine.

The no shift is a different problem. On that trans it"s usually one of two things. The speed sensor on the tail (OD) housing, or a problem in the electronic governor system. Either is a pretty easy find with a scan tool.

The thing I`ve seen many times is an O2 sensor that is bad.
The computer sends a 5 volt reference to the gov sensor in the trans, the same is sent to the O2 sensors. If one shorts out, it drops the ref voltage to the trans and won`t shift. Kind of a screwy deal but have fixed many after they`ve been to the dealer and been told their trans is shot..

IF you can get it on a scan tool, have the codes read, and watch the sensor data. If you post back with any of that info, I can probably get you a closer answer to what you have going on...

You are most likely operating in "limp mode" What this means is that the drivetrain computer has detected a problem with the transmission and has it locked in 2nd gear. This is factory programming and the problem will not go away until a trans repair.
Usually this happens with the first sign of problem. The reason: So you can get to the dealership without major damage to the unit, especially if it is under warranty. The manufacturer is not worried about your expense, just theirs.

Im pretty sure its in low. Im 98% on thinking that. I wondered too about if there is any type of cable adjustment, up by the throttle body. Im sure its never been touched since we have owned it other than normal service. Chad

That would be funny if the O2 sensor is doing that! Its been drinking 50/50 mixes of E85 and pump gas. I pull a trailer with it, usually a 6000-8500lb (trailer weight included) I keep it out of overdrive and does not see alot over 55-60 mph while pulling the trailer. Since we put new tires on it, the 2nd to 3rd shifting symptom has started up,, and it shifts if I let off it till it shifts then get back in it and go. It will downshift kinda early though,, say like going up hill, and giving it a little gas to keep it going,, but not like flooring it or anything like that,,, Maybe just a hair over half throttle it will kickdown. It delayed the 2nd to 3rd shift with no load on it or with a load, made no difference. Chad

Fluid smells fine, and is clean, no black, or silver fines. It worked fine yesterday other than the slow 2-3 upshift. No cables have been adjusted, but I dont know if there is any,,,, I got to get a book for one. Chad

I'm surprized that E85 mix isn't shutting you down ? It will screw up/with cars not made for it. At work we had someone trying a mix in their car don't know how strong they had but it shut it down. Had to drain it all out and put reg. gas back in it to get it going again.

Had the same slow shift problem with a 98 Durango. It stemed from a plugged filter in the transmission. We changed the filter and the problem is almost gone. When was the last time you serviced the transmission?

12 and 55 for key method code check. Last service was 5000 miles ago. ChadSreply to post at 18:12:06 09/11/08)

Couldn't find those codes in my computer.

Could the 55 be 45? 45 is for 3-4 shift solenoid or governor pressure sensor.
