O/T gun question but used on the farm

thought it was funny myself (your reply that is) I have no knowledge of the interchange but love my sks and still hunt with it when I am not trying to shoot 300+ yards

As far as I know, no SKS barrel is going to fit an AK. And, not all SKS barrels interchange with other SKSs - at least, so I'm told. The quality differs also, depending on if it's a Chinese, Yugoslovian, or Russian make. I've got half a dozen Yugo SKS's and one Chinese SKS - but no Russians. The Yugos don't have the chrome inner-barrels like the Chinese does.

Yep SKS and a 30/30 are both good to about 150 yards maybe a tad bit more but thats about it unless you throw a full mag at them and then its pot luck LOL

Nope barrels won't interchange. If you want quick change mags on a SKS you might look at the paratrooper model. Slightly shorter barrel but has 30 round banana clip detachable mag. Shoots pretty good too. :)

Ya I had one once but sold it for something else. 30 round mag is not legal for hunting in my area so it didn't work well for what I wanted

Same country, same caliber, but two totally different guns. Cheaper Than Dirt has folding stocks and extended mags for the SKS if that helps.

I was somewhere? and saw a sks that would accept the ak clips. It also had someway? to select between semi and fully automatic. Awesome! David............

Old, not that I can swear to it, but do they still have a limit on magazine capacity for deer hunting? It used to be 10 I think. I know they no longer require a minimum weight bullet. A neighbor had me buy a .220 Swift die so I could load some heavier bullets in it for deer hunting, but that was back in the late 70's

I was able to find a 5 shot and a 10 shot magazine for my .30 carbine and loaded up some soft points for that.

I didn't address your barrel change question as I am totally ignorant about that.

Yep in Missouri you have a 10 round limit on mags. I have a 30 round clip for my 30 carbine but I have a paper clip in it to limit it to 10 round just to be legal. As far as bullet weight there is no limit as long as its center fire so you can use a 32cal. pistol if you wanted but I think the kill rate would be maybe 1 in 1000. Yep I keep up with deer hunting reg. and have friend in the conservation office which does help

Ya but select fire is not legal with out a lot of paper work and some big $$. Sounds more like an AK74 then a AK47. One is select fire and the other just sime auto

I used to have a paper with instructions to modify an SKS to accept AK mags. I cant find it now but from what I rember the main change was to weld in a pice of key stock.if you can find the instructions for that and an aftermarket stock you're in business.

I'm going to be ignorant to the original question too, actually, (never heard of that interchange between those 2 barrels either) never was impressed by any of those SKS's and cheap variants, as well as some other firearms of foreign manufacture, like some foreign made M1A's (the M14 w/no selector)Probably can't beat the price on em, so some will look past the quality, and not knocking anyone for it, better quality sure comes at a price when dealing in firearms.

The thing that caught my attention was the magazine capacity, 10 rounds ? I'm hoping no one who deer hunts actually needs that capacity to take one ! :), NYS allows 5 rounds, and I believe the magazine must not be capable of holding any more, don't think a modified one or one that has been stopped up to hold less is legal, must be a legit 5 round magazine. A lot of these type of regulations, if violated could result in the seizure of youre rifle, vehicle and anything associated with you hunting, definitely so if caught poaching. I also believe you cannot possess a larger mag while hunting, say like in your bag or pack as a spare. I still use an M1A for deer, and the 5 round mag, is so short nothing to grab onto and the loading pattern, first round on top is on the opposite side, which is annoying for a reason I forget, as opposed to the 20 round mag. Most times 1 round does the job, but I've hastily taken shots on occasion and have to use a 2nd one, not so lately, but does happen every so often, really have to concentrate, sometimes that deer can distract a person a bit.

If you want to hunt I suggest getting a good hunting rifle. A lot accurate and easier to aim and hit what you want. Those fancy Military guns are made for poring a lot of lead at an object without really having to aim them. A really good hunting rifle is made for long range accurate shooting. I had a 7 MM Remington Mag it was custom made rifle from different manufactures, kicked like mule a but could hit anything up to 1000 yards. You could put together a real nice hunting rifle in any size ammo for the same money that would out shoot any of those Military things. Remember Bolt action rifle help you become a better shot because of the slower time it take to get off that second shot. I learned on a single shot 22 had to hit the target the first time or else.

Walt, for my area the SKS is a very good hunting gun because of all the brush we have and also we get lucky if we have a shot thats over 300 yards which yes is way to far for an SKS. I've looked around for something like a 270 etc. but when it come to what one would cost I had to just go to the old militarily types. Can't see paying $500 for one when I could get one for under $250. I've been hunting with an SKS now for more then a decade and I've only lost 2 or 3 deer in all that time

in my opinion, SKS's and AK's shouldn't be inbred. i have an SKS, and it is a great gun, but i've heard they don't accept any AK parts very well. have you looked into a dragunov style stock for the SKS and some 10-round stripper clips? look here----
