Hey Everyone, Anyone that knows me knows that I am a Die Hard John Deere Guy, But I have found a 1939 Model H, Serial Number 501-3. I put a message here earlier but didnt get much response. Now some people are telling me that the first few Hs didnt have serial numbers? Some say they did? What should I look for here. It is Serial Number 501 on the Tag. Should it say 501 on the right frame rail as well? or? Let me know your thoughts, I have a few serial number 1 tractors and would like to add this one to my line up. Thanks..------ ------

Is the serial number 501 or 5013? Both would be a '39 model...

The serial number is stamped below the #1 spark plug on the block on a flat machined pad, as well.

Pictures?

As well as the serial number on the engine, which should be the same as the chassis number, check out those casting codes. The code will look like 7*10*I. 7 for the month,10 for the day, and I for 1939. J for 1940, K for 1941, etc.

Guy Fay published an article in Red Power Mag a few months ago that explained the 501 dash numbers... If I remember right, tractors that we sold to 2rd party outfitters (such as graders, cotton pickers, roller compactors) got the "501 dash" designation..

A picture of the serial plate would help a lot.
