Buckley, Michigan Old Engine Show

Starting Thursday, August 14th, the sleepy little wide-spot-in-the-road known as Buckley will see it's population swell to over 100,000 as the engine show kicks off. We haven't missed but maybe one in 2o-plus years. My dad was born in a cabin about two miles from there and my grandparents are burried in a small cemetery trhere.

It will have a new significance since I have a TO-30. Love to see the big steamers: Case, MM, Huber, etc. Saw mill runs all day, blacksmith, shinglemill, plowing with old steamers, hit-and-miss engines, train ride, big flea market, and lots of good food and music. The show runs through Sunday, August 17th. Any one going?

Been there twice and it requires a lot of walking. I wonder if they have the steam locomotive still running with passenger cars. The oil field pumping display is fantastic. The fleas are overwelming. They had a steam tractor there that was recoverd from the bottom of the lake by Tippy Dam.
Where do you stay when you go there? We stayed in Muskegon one time and in Cadillac another. Can't recommend The Sands in Cadillac however.

Vern;

We usually don't stay. We just drive up for the day. When we first started going, we camped. But it has grown so big, unless you get there Thursday, it's hard to find a place. Nights are the best time for music; anyone that can play anything; spoons, juice harp, dulcimers, etc. really jam.

I agree--not much in Cadillac, ether for staying or eating. If someone would open a Cracker Barrel it would be a gold mine.

My wife and I have gone since we been married (4yrs).I went about every 3 yrs before that.We have a family friend that has a steamer there. We go for the day but sometimes stay the night if the couple have no one else hanging around. The music is great in the evening. The train is going.Fleas are like someone said overwelming.
If you are intimidated with the walking on the uneven ground but still want to see steamers remember Oakley is also the same weekend. That is down near Owasso.(sp).

There is a Cracker Barrell not that far away, on the south end of TC. And all sorts of hotels in Grand Traverse also. For that matter, Manistee and Ludington are not far off.
I am going to head up for Friday I am thinking.

Hopefully your visit to the Sands was several years ago. They have new owners now and it's very clean and friendly.

Been going to Buckley for about 15 years. Hope to see some of you there!

Old Stinker;

I don't think they let you run quads in the show area. Just too many people. They do have shuttle wagons from the parking area to the show grounds and there are several places to sit and rest. EM units on hand too.

Traverse is probably the best bet for food and lodging. It too has grown and sprawled over the years.

We"ll be there tomorrow (Friday) I"ve got a friend that has beautiful 8n there. My 3 year old son likes the train a lot. By the way - the train runs basically all the time, and rides are free. You might have to wait in line, though.

Its a good time.
