O.T.-Trimming Goats Hoofs

A bit off topic I know but I did talk tractors with the herder!
He is grazing a herd(flock?)of goats on a slope near the airport by my house. Boy can those goats go thru blackberry bramble!
Anyway, he was telling me he has to trim their hooves once a month, every month. That seemed a lot to me for a foraging animal especally out on pasture.
Is that really the case? Anybody here rent out their goats as brush trimmers? Just curoius...

unless there is something wrong with his goats, once every 3 months should do it real good, twice a year if they are on semi-hard ground

Maybe he just likes trimming their toenails.

I can't imagine how any animal can eat rose or blackberry brambles they way goats do, but they seem to prefer that to anything else.

Yes if goats do not have a lot of rocks to climb around on they need there hoofs trimmed often. Thats why in my goat pin theres 2 big rocks as in 500 plus LBS and also other rock areas

Probably ought to check them that often. Probably won't need to trim that often. We do ours about every three months or so. You'll recognize when the outer "shell" starts to grow over the bottom of the hoof, and will need trimming. As others say, it depends on how much walking they do on what surfaces.

Some of our goats don't ever get trimmed. It all depends on the age of the goat and how many rocks or how much hard ground is around. Young goats are so active they tend to wear off their hooves as fast as they grow. When old goats get slow - and don't jerk around anymore - yeah their hooves grow fast. Especially when fenced in a soft-ground area. But, every month? Sounds nuts to me. Our oldest and laziest goats get trimmed once or twice a year.
