What keeps draining my battery?

JD 2020 with a year old battery (Car Quest) a new JD starter, new batt cables, wiring from alternator checked and repaired (new connectors). I put the battery on a trickle charge for 24 hours (batt in the tractor), let it set for 5 days (got busy on other things) then tried to start tractor, no go, batt almost dead. Don't see a spark when I disconnect cable from batt so I doubt there's a drain downstream. Fan belt is snug. Wondering of the battery sitting on the steel bottom of the battery box is a problem (the pad is missing).

The battery sitting directly on the steel should not be a problem. Batteries can go bad in one year or less. Take it back to CarQuest and have it checked.

If that alternator has an internal regulator it could be the problem. Has it just started doing this battery drain? I would disconnect the ground cable on the battery and see if it will start after sitting 4 or 5 days. If it will start, I would have that alternator checked. Hal

Hook a teast light between ground cable and battery to check for drains. If it lights up any at all it is draining.

Of course you can also use an ampmeter.

What do you call a trickle charger. One amp into a tractor battery for 24 hours may not be enough if the battery was fully discharged.

Voltage reg might not be controlling charge properly. Low volts may lead to early sulphation and over charge will also lead to early failure through gassing and overheating.

If your connections have been poor the battery may already be toast.

You need a voltmeter to assess the alternator regulation, and do a discharge test on the battery to determine if it's capacity is down.

Kent assume batt is 75 amp hour rating. With a one amp charger you need 75 hours or 3 days to charge it fully. Check specific gravity with hydrometer with float or colored balls after this period of time. If still low, return to sender. Remember that song? Was it new? If ever dead and frozen, probably shot. If charger is 3 amp then only charge 25 hours. Amp hour rating divided by charger size determines how long to plug it in. Batt sounds like #1 suspect to me.
